You emerge from the town up a stone staircase to an amazing view along the ramparts and the beautiful gardens below. Lovingly restored you get a feel for how the walls looked in Medieval Times. Imagining a moat where the gardens are.

And majestic. With beautiful gardens very well maintained and a nice walk on the walls themselves offering great views of the gardens.

Park on Rue Francis Decker. From there you get to see the gardens and the battlements. It is a good place to picnic, there are toilets and even a fair amount of parking places and at least one disabled bay.
I was told that there is limited access to the battlements themselves but I couldn't find that.
A nice place to visit on a sunny day.

Stayed in Vannes for three days and visited the Remparts daily. Beautiful, but especially at night. I found them very accessible, either from the city center, or from the parking area outside them. Not sure about handicap access. Vannes is such a safe city, walking through here at night is not a problem.

These old city walls are among the best preserved in France. You can walk access the tops of the ramparts for free in certain sections, or pay in others. Alternatively, admire the old city walls from the gardens occupying the moat area below. The gardens are very well maintained and provide wonderful formal flower displays from spring right through to late summer. Sometimes there is also outdoor art exhibited here.
The old washing area, or Vieux Lavoirs, is to be found in the beautifully laid out formal gardens and lawns in front of the old ramparts. Here the ladies of the city did their clothes washing.
On a hot day young children will enjoy taking off shoes & socks and spending far too long paddling barefoot in the shallow river, especially when they discover visitors are in the habit of throwing coins into the water!
Our favourite Vannes restaurant, Pizzeria Villa Romana (16, rue des Vierges), has one of the beset best outdoor terrace in Vannes, situated overlooking the ramparts and Castle gardens with a sunny south aspect.

We could see the walls and garden from our hotel, the ramparts nearly go the whoe way around the town, lots of lovely garden space next to them, lovely for just sitting and watching the world go by

While we were in Vannes we couldn’t park at the Halles des Lices and being one-way the only way out was through the narrow Porte de Poterne and across the even narrower bridge to the main road. Wonderful. Not only was there cheap parking on the Rue Francis Decker but we were suddenly looking at the magnificent ramparts of the city and the ramparts gardens.
The ramparts are immense and leave you a little in awe especially trying to visualise what they were like in their heyday. A fraction of the original is still intact and consist of a large section of the battlement walls, two magnificent towers, four arched entrances (portes) and the Chateau de l’Hermine. It is a must to walk the length of the walls and take in the views of the gardens and the town. They act a great viewing platform for photographs. Definitely recommended.

These lovely ramparts, with formal gardens embrace the medieval centre like a necklace. You can wander for ages and see something different and each point.

You have to give it to the French, even when building something as drab as a defensive structure, they make it in such away to make it look elegant, while being very practical for purpose.
The huge rounded towers were magnificent and would have been daunting to face for any attacking force.
