Worth doing it once. It gives a beautiful panorama of the port de la Houle, the ocean and the piers.

We were recommended to consider Cancale as an attractive and worthy daytime stop over for a break in our journey from Roscoff to Normandy. Amply serves that purpose. The lower part of the town has all the character of a Channel coastal community and the largely unspoilt rural areas on either side provide excellent views and walks. Well known for fish restaurants, particularly the oysters. Pleasant easy going feel. Coast and countryside has a bit of a feel of Devon and Cornwall but not so pressured or hectic.

We arrived in Cancale by bus from Saint Malo, and never having been here before we just followed our noses.

It turned out to be the right choice, for we went downhill from the bus station in the general direction of where we thought the beaches would be.

We ran out of roads and lanes and ended up following a narrow gravel path that wound round the coastal hinterland, with many stunning views of the beaches and sea below. As we walked we passed many old stone cottages and gardens, still blooming in autumn.

We then turned around and headed to Cancale Port, which we had spotted from a high point on our walk.

Here we found numerous restaurants, cafes and bars facing the harbour, and the Cancale Lighthouse.

Next to the lighthouse is are many stalls selling fresh oysters - the Cancale Oyster Market. We bought a dozen and sat on the sea wlal to eat them. They were so good that we backed up and ordered another dozen.

Arriving to Cancale by car, you notice that the upper town is the more modern, business-like town, while the charming, old part of town is down the hills to the waterfront. And what a lovely area! Busy at times, with great restaurants and a couple of hotels.

We highly recommend this lovely walk on the GR 34 near Cancale. We took the bus from Cancale to Plage du Verger and walked the 12km along the coast back to Cancale. The scenery is beautiful and includes beaches and cliffs and country lanes. Heaven on a sunny day.
