The Massif du Sancy offers a good choice of lovely ridge walking on open mountainsides with great views. The summit itself is marred by the wooden stairs which lead from the top of the cable car but the rest of the massif offers unspoilt mountain scenery.

Great skiing value although the 3 main ski lifts do easily interlink with the ski runs - great for families and intermediate skiing

We visited Puy de Sancy and Mont-Dore on our motorcycle and loved the area. We took the cable car up the mountain from Super-Besse where there are lots of easy-to-hike trails to the various peaks offering wonderful views! And be sure to enjoy the Auvergne cheeses while you are there!

Two ways to access, either by walking using the well way-marked paths or by cable car for a very reasonable €10.20 return. A well made path with lots of wooden steps leads from the top of the cable car to the summit, and can be achieved by most people. The views are truly spectacular in all directions if the weather is clear. There is also a cafe/restaurant and toilets at the top cable car station.

Drove 1.5 hours as we wanted to take the telepherique and then walk the rest of the way to the top of Puy du Sancy. Checked on their website and they said that it was open but got there and both were closed for maintenance. Disappointing.

Beautiful setting for the overloop of this unique area incl. Puy de Dome. The top could be crouded though.

We did the full horseshoe walk from Mont Dore - about 20km with some 1100m of ascent. Strenuous but a superb outing - much like the Lakes or North Wales. The summit area is busy but otherwise you will be largely alone as you walk round. Route-finding is fairly easy but could be tricky in mist or high winds when it is probably best avoided.

There are many comparatively short walks up from the massive car park, some with great exposure. You can make a fabulous 2 1/2 hr circuit and take in a coffee and snack at the ski station, with incredible views .
