A sad reminder to a horrible war horror story
Jul 2017 • Solo
I always spend time on military cemeteries when I can. This particular one is having a few thousand French military victims of the Battle of the Linge that took place around 1915-1916. This particular cemetery is not perfectly maintained but it is still always saddening to see how many young people died to protect our Freedom. I was particularly impressed by the individual messages from family at the two large areas where the soldiers that could not be identified were buried all together. Another thing that was different from the US military cemeteries is that it looks like the dog tag - or what was left of it - was used to put the message for each cross together. The Linge war memorial museum is impressive but together with a visit to this place you can start imagining the loss that this literally uphill battle back in World War I cost to France and the other participating countries.

French War Grave from Le Linge battle site
Jun 2016 • Friends
If you visit the battlefield of Le Linge in the Vosges Mountains it is worth stopping here on the way down to pay respects to all the young French soldiers (7000) who lost their lives in this battle at the beginning of such a senseless war. Closer to the battlefield itself is the German equivalent with the graves of over 2000 of their 10,000 soldiers who also died. Outside is a quote from some time ago by Jean-Claude Juncker, currently EU president, saying anyone who has doubts about the Community should visit these war graves.
