About
Centuries ago, the sundial above the Mauterndorf castle gate greeted merchants, scoundrels and travelers on their way through the Lungau region. The portal where passing traders once heard the words: “Open your bag and pay the toll” is now the gate leading visitors right back to Middle Ages. Our opening hours: Winter: January 2 - 30 (Tue, Thur) 10.00 am - 6.00 pm February 3 - 28 (Mon - Fri) 10.00 am - 6.00 pm March 3 - April 2 (Tue, Thur) 10.00 am - 6.00 pm April 6 - 14 (daily) 10.00 am - 6.00 pm Summer: May 1 - October 31 (daily) May, June, September, October 10.00 am - 6.00 pm July, August 9.30 am - 6.30 pm

If you are in the area, this is a great castle to visit. I went in October for a visit to the castle itself, then again in December to visit the Christmas market there. It's a beautiful castle with some great history - the exhibition on Hermann Göring was fascinating. (If the exhibition is no longer there, look up the history of Göring and the castle).
I used the audio guide, and there was a dress up section for children (or adults who aren't embarrassed!)
In December, the castle itself was closed but you can walk around it if you go to the Christmas market, which is really nice.
I wouldn't necessarily make a special visit here, but if you are nearby, it is worth a trip :)

History comes alive inside this wonderfully preserved castle as you get a taste of daily life in the middle ages. Wax figures show the typical characters you would meet in a castle, and the informative yet lively audio guide teaches you about day to day life of the different people, from the prince-archbishop to the kitchen servant and everyone in between. The narration in the audio guide is peppered with quotes from the diary of an Italian visitor to the castle which give a fascinating insight to castle life. The audio guide allows listening to in-depth information on a variety of topics.
Children can dress up in medieval clothes and try out armor.
There is also a museum about the region inside the castle (Landschaftsmuseum). It looked interesting, but unfortunately the displays were only in German.

The castle is located between downtown and ski resort. Between December and March the museum opens after 16:30 - the closing time of the ski-lifts at Grosseck- Speiereck ski resort.

I think the castle is more beautiful from the outside than the inside. Friendly people and good guide give tours in the tower, but the tower is fully renovated with fire glass inside so the old look and feel is a little bit gone. Nice for small children or a rainy day. Free entrance with lungau card and audio tour in own language.

In winter many rooms and floor are closed. The open rooms are largely reconstructed with orribile mannequins. nothing interesting to see in winter but you pay the ticket anyway. only 1 guided tour in German at 5PM. avoid, don't waste your time!!!!!

Centrally located in Mauterndorf village with sufficient car park for free.
Adults €9, kids 5,5 and under age 6 for free.
Availability of several language audio guides.
A tour to the very well renovated tower is recommended and a guide will explain how the people managed their lives at that time with many original fittings and furnishing. The view from the top is really nice and 360 °.
There was a daily show in August (all summer).
Kids have a large playground on the backside of the courtyard with slides etc.
An old style tavern/restaurant provides food and drinks with an outside terrace for hot days with a nice view.

If Thu have kids they will love this place, but as two adults we were pretty disappointed. It's about €12 a piece to get in. They do have a self guided tour with a recorded system, but it focuses more on giving an ambience for a particular period during the life of one of the bishops who inhabited the castle rather than the castle itself. There are plenty of castles in this region we would have preferred one a bit less touristy.

Very nice castle. Lot of volunteers who put their energy in keeping the castle great.
Lots of history. Audio guide. Book on the internet , is ideal and cheaper

We visited Burg Mauterndorf with our 2 children, 8 and 5 years old, on a sunny summer's day.
Staying in Katschberg (15 minutes away) we were able to use our Katschberg card (given to all hotel guests in Katschberg) to gain free access with audio tour.
Initially the staff were reluctant to give an audio set to our 5 year old (apparently they only give to children over 6 because younger ones can break the handsets). However we persisted and the staff conceded and let her have one.
The audio tours are excellent. There are separate adult and child versions so the kids stayed interested and entertained throughout the tour, listening to fun stories about life in the castle in the Middle Ages, a great way to engage the kids whilst helping them to learn about the history of the castle and the people who lived, worked, visited (and invaded!) there.
As well as the audio tour there are interactive exhibits, the possibility to try on medieval clothing (the kids loved this!), play board games and try on armour. The adventure playground is well designed with a big (fast) slide and plenty of places to clamber around.
We stayed almost 5hrs in total, including lunch at the restaurant, we all enjoyed every minute.

Castle could be interesting place also for children. There is possibility to try the armour in the castle arsenal and also try to wear the costumes like being duke or peasant. You can see the defend tower and have nice view around. Don´t worry. There are windows up there, so it is not so windy like in 14th century. They have audio guides in several languages including Czech.
