Medici Fortress is a castle located in Volterra, a medieval city in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. It is a beautiful fortress, which you can see from Parco Archeologico Enrico Fiumi. We did not enter to the fortress, but we can see views from it. Nice.

Yes most of the fortress is the local prison, but contrary to the other reviews you can visit the Maschio Tower which features in some of the photos from earlier reviews. It’s not open all the time though so check the website. Worth a visit though as it has a great view over the town, even if the window grates spoil the photos! You access from the east side of the town by Porta a Selci and by walking up Via di Castello. Don’t be put off by the fact you have to walk past the entrance to the prison!

the Medici Fortress today houses a prison and is fenced off for visits. so except the big walls from the outside, there is nothing to see.

I am sure that this would be a very impressive castle but you cannot enter it as it is a prison. You cannot go near it either because of the security fences. Best place for a photo is from the park next to it.

View from the fortress is worth the walk up the hill. The inner courtyard is filled with olive trees, wisteria clings to the rock walls, and from the top of the fortress and can see for miles in every direction, across the Tuscan hills and valleys. Be prepared to climb stone stairs.

A beautiful old fortress from the outside that dominates the whole end of Volterra. Don't try to enter though because it may be 3-5 years before you get out. The fortress is now a state prison which is kind of disappointing because I would have liked to see the inside.

Still in use as a prison so you cannot get close to even the exterior walls best seen from the south side or an aerial view on a postcard.

We had thought to visit the fortress long with the Roman theatre and the Etruscan site. However, the ticket seller inside the archeological park soon put us right - the fortress is now a prison! Very impressive to drive by, the walls probably look even taller from the inside ;-)

This fortress is HUGE and beautifully built. The Medici were responsible for its construction. Converted into a prison in contemporary times, the main entrance has a sign warning against photography, presumably to retain the anonymity of the individuals coming and going.

It may have been a fortress some time ago, but now it is a prison. You can't go inside, but outside it's a pretty impressive building.
