The Romanesque cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta overlooks the lovely Piazza San Giovanni and is fronted by the classic baptistery. The marble entrance portal stands out on the façade, while the three-nave interior houses numerous pictorial and sculptural works, mostly dating back to the sixteenth century, a beautiful pulpit, several funerary monuments and a precious gilded coffered ceiling. Entrance is paid and the ticket also includes a visit to the baptistery and the exhibition center of Santa Maria Maddalena. A visit that as a whole satisfied me beyond expectations.

The exterior of the Duomo is certainly not that of the image on the screen on the left, that is the Duomo of Siena, very different (fuckers, change that image!). That said, the Cathedral of Volterra is a museum church, in the sense that you pay an entrance fee for the visit. It is best to get the "Soul of Volterra" card at the office in the same square, to also have access to the Baptistery opposite and the exhibition centre. The Romanesque style church has a simple appearance externally, with a beautiful portal decorated with geometric inlays and an apse area with the typical white-green duotone. The interior is mainly sixteenth-century, more sumptuous, with three naves with columns and a wooden ceiling. Many valuable paintings in the chapels, which are difficult to photograph due to unsuitable lighting. Definitely worth a visit.

Our Guide Carolina, focused on many details, pointed out that the marble portal was created with the archaeological remains of the material used in the Roman theater. The Duomo is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. I was impressed by the bell tower very detached from the Duomo and on the long facade a sculpture dedicated to Pope Lino native of Volterra and successor of Peter, so the second Pope in history, exercised his papacy for twelve years.

I disagree with the obligation to pay a ticket to visit a church. A church is not a museum. The ticket costs €8, and includes a visit to the baptistery and an adjacent exhibition center. That's unsympathetic cunning. This prevents the possibility of entering the church for a moment of prayer. Learn from the Duomo of Milan which provides both the possibility of a paid sightseeing tour, and a free entrance for the
prayer with a general view of the interior. Obviously we have given up the visit and will look at the photos of the Cathedral of Volterra on the Internet. Too bad.

We wanted to visit the Cathedral of Volterra but we gave up because to enter you pay €8 per person, without family discount. The price also includes a visit to the baptistery. If for a short moment of prayer you have to pay, then it is better to go to the Cinema. This experience partially sent us through the sightseeing tour of the city. Scandalous.

Piazza San Giovanni is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Baptistery, fine examples of Romanesque architecture and works of art of inestimable value. The church, with its square, is the religious center of community life. The works preserved inside are admirable, among which the group of 5 sculptures depicting the "Deposition of Christ from the Cross" in carved polychrome wood stands out. Entrance costs €5.00.

Cathedral of Volterra is the most important religious building in this town, a medieval one in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. The old town is wonderful, but this Duomo (cathedral) is really normal, it has nothing especial and it is located in the old town, but not in the main square. It is ok, if you walk around city center, but there are a lot of streets/buildings better.

The Cathedral was a very pleasant surprise, as we strolled through it. There are several paintings and other artwork. We were especially impressed with the "Chapel of Deposition.: The most antique artwork of the Cathedral, this wooden masterpiece depicts Jesus on the cross with Nicodemus taking him down from the cross while the Virgin Mary and Saint John are at the sides. A wonderful masterpiece. The church is plain on the outside but very pretty on the inside. It was consecrated by Pope Castillo May 1120. Urgent renovation needed now and they are seeking support. The church is celebrating 9 centuries.
