A group of 8 of us took tours with Annie in the towns of San Gimignano and Volterra. Although many travel guides slam San Gimignano as being too touristy, we found the town quite vibrant as Annie highlight many of the towers and how they functioned as fortifications years ago. Also, this town has a rich history in horse racing as Annie explained, for the various neighborhoods compete with one another in the City square each Summer. As Annie lives in Volterra, she gives a real insight to a town that was flourishing before the birth of Christ. Enjoyed learning how the locals prevented
one of their gateways from being destroyed during the Second World War. A review of the Roman ruins by Annie also highlighted the rich history this city has to offer. What we all liked about Annie is that she gave a very balanced tour of these cities, not over highlighting any one aspect. You walk away feeling like your time was well spent with her.

I first met Annie in 2015, and every year since (excluding 2020 because of the pandemic) I have treated at least one set of guests each summer to Annie's amazing tour of Volterra!
Annie is so very warm and welcoming, and she is incredibly knowledgeable about the history and culture of Volterra from its Etruscan origins to the present. Annie makes the tour both interesting and fun, and even after these many years, I still learn new things every time! Originally from the U.S., she is fluent in both English and Italian.
I also highly recommend the wine tasting experience with her husband Francesco, who pairs each selection with light food bites to bring out the finest attributes of each vintage. He is a professional sommelier who expertly guides you through each step of the wine tasting process.
Every one of my guests has said that their experience in Volterra with Annie and Francesco was one of the highlights of their visit...not to be missed!

My husband and I booked a 3 hour walking tour in Volterra with Claudia as our guide. She is one of the best tour guides we have ever encountered. Usually my husband and I will walk around a historic town, do a bit of advanced reading, admire the sites and buildings, and enjoy the experience. But Claudia’s pride, enthusiasm, and knowledge of her city changed our experience from a walk looking at charming old buildings to developing a new appreciation for Etruscan history as well as the spirit of Volterran people from centuries ago up to the present. We highly recommend this tour.

Annie is wonderful.

My family (my wife, myself, our two daughters in their 20’s, and my older daughter’s fiancé) recently had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Annie touring Volterra. Each of us had different interests, yet Annie kept all of us captivated, and the feeling was universal that our time with her in Voltera was the highlight of our time in Tuscany. Annie’s knowledge of and love for Volterra and its history shines through, and she was engaging, informative, and fun throughout the three hours we spent with her.

I can’t recommend Annie highly enough. You’ll learn a tremendous amount from her, have a much deeper understanding of Volterra than if you tried to walk through on your own, meet locals along the way, and be left feeling like you’ve made a friend who just gave you a wonderful insider’s excursion through her town.

Annie was an outstanding guide for us in Volterra! We highly recommend! She was friendly, knowledgeable and truly made this ancient city with its Etruscan history come alive. She walked us through its history, the streets , buildings, the amphitheater, and the people
with such ease and so much fun. We stopped at a local market to try some fresh prosciutto and fruit, met an alabaster artist which was amazing to his him work and though it was only 3 hours - we could have definitely spent much more time with her! Your experience in Volterra will be richly enhanced!

My wife and I had a 2 hour tour of Volterra. We have travelled all over the world seeing many churches, cathedrals, palaces, etc. so we were more interested in the less frequented areas of Volterra and Annie delivered. Annie is as good as they get when it comes to a private tour guide. She knows all about Volterra and a lot more. Book her and you won't be disappointed.

We had the pleasure of joining Francesco for a full day wine tour & trip to the Mad Butcher for lunch. Francesco met us at our agriturismo outside of Volterra and began by telling us about the different types of Italian wine. He answered all of our questions and was very knowledgeable (& personable!) We learned a lot and I will never look at a Super Tuscan the same again!

We toured La Massa winery in Chianti (and got to ride on the Old Chianti Road), with a personalized tour with Francesco and the agriculturist from the winery. We got to see the entire winery and end-to-end operations with two wine experts. The care and pride the proprietor and agriculturist took in the entire process was very apparent - very different from any wine tour I have had at the mass-producers. At the end we got to try their fantastic wines in the tasting room.

Next stop: lunch! We went to the Mad Butcher's restaurant (we had seen him on Bourdain!). When you walk in, there is a table of about 30 wines and a giant spread of Italian bread, meats, and cheeses. Help yourself! When we got seated we were treated with a huge plate of meats: pork, steak tartare, Italian meatloaf (YUM), hamburger patty... anything you could dream of. One of the surprises of the meal were the vegetables, which we dipped in olive oil and some type of amazing Italian salt. Francesco is so friendly and fun - he laughs a lot (at our stories!) and is a terrific tour guide and lunch date. This was perhaps the most unique and fun thing we did on our entire trip - we just wished we could have stayed longer!

Francesco is like Norm walking into Cheers at the wineries and the Mad Butcher, so we felt very special & like we were part of the family. We highly recommend Francesco (and the Mad Butcher, and La Massa)! We regret we were not able to do the Walking Tour with his wife, Annie (who Francesco speaks GLOWINGLY of, you can tell they are very much in love). Oh well, I guess we will have to go back!

Thanks Francesco!

Having spent a thoroughly enjoyable morning tour of Volterra with Annie, the female part of this husband-wife team, we signed up for an hour long class with her partner, Francesco Gronchi. Not only was Francesco every bit as charming as Annie, but the class, conducted at a local wine shop (Enoteca Scali) was an extremely useful introduction to the wines of Tuscany. If you don't have time to get into the back roads of Tuscany, or you're slightly intimidated by the whole Italian wine scene, this class with Francesco was a great way to learn about the wines of Tuscany in a fun and approachable setting!

Our first day was a Montalcino tour with the focus on wine, wine and food and wine with Francesco. We started with an eye-opening tour of the estate of La Fiorita. We met with the head agronomist, the assistant wine maker and learned about the entire wine making process. They were just bringing in some of the 2015 harvest and we were able to watch the early stages of the fruit-to-wine process. We tasted some young and more mature wines.
I got the feeling that Francesco could have done the tours himself, as he seemed to guide the wine makers through their process, making the tour more relevant for us.

Then we stopped for lunch at a fabulous restaurant in Montalcino, Boccon di Vino, where we had the La Fiorita wines paired with some great food.
After lunch we headed to a more "traditional" vineyard, Biondi-Santi’s Il Greppo. A most beautiful estate with history spilling out everywhere. More wine tasting of great wines and that ended our day of touring in Montalcino.

The next day we met Annie in Volterra, an ancient and picturesque Tuscan hill town. She took us through the winding streets of the town showing us the ancient history and origins of the town, as well as Volterra's position in the 1300 -1500's and some great history from as current as WWII. We saw an artisan maker of alabaster art and got to watch the process in action. Annie was incredibly knowledgeable and very engaging. We had a great day in Volterra, even after she left

My husband and I and two friends did an hour's walking tour with Annie in Volterra followed by a wine tasting with her husband Francesco. The walking tour was excellent value covering the highlights of Volterra from its Etruscan history to modern day. Annie is an excellent guide and is clearly passionate about the history of this beautiful town. The wine tasting with Francesco was equally good and we leant alot not only about Tuscan wines but the art of wine tasting. Francesco is also clearly very passionate and extremely knowledgeable about his subject matter and my only disappointment is that we could not have done a full day wine tasting with him. Both highly recommended.
