Its origins date back to 1460.
The palace has fantastic architecture that captures your gaze in a bewitching and evocative way.
The city council chamber is a marvel.
The internal gardens are truly extraordinary.
Definitely worth a visit!

The Palazzo dei Priori is undoubtedly the main artistic manifestation of the historic center of Viterbo.
Much more spectacular than the older Palazzo dei Papi, it has splendid frescoed rooms inside.
Exceptional are the Council Hall, seat of the municipal council and, in particular, the beautiful Royal Hall, adorned on the walls with wonderful frescoes, and embellished with a beautiful wooden ceiling where the historic centers of the castles which in the Middle Ages were located under the control of Viterbo, while in the center stands the Lion, the emblem of Viterbo.
The visit is absolutely recommended.

To visit these beautiful rooms with the frescos you must find the entrance to city hall (next to the post office). Take the stairs or lift to the second floor and the staff will direct you. The frescos of the maps are very interesting. We spent about 15 to 20 minutes admiring each of the 4 or 5 rooms. Well worth a stop, including the view over the piazza.

This palace on the Piazza dei Plebiscito was once known as the Palazzo Commune and is now housing city hall. We were limited in our time in Viterbo so didn't have time to enter and tour the palace but it contains some beautiful murals and frescoes.

Facing onto Piazza del Plebiscito is the Palazzo dei Priori, formerly known as the Palazzo del Comune. On the first morning of our visit we could not fully appreciate this building as there was a market in progress, the whole piazza was full of stalls and under the portico on the ground floor there were also stall holders. So we made our way out the back of the building into the courtyard, which was also busy. The courtyard/terrace was a great place to visit for the views over the valley and rooftops, view the pretty fountain and learn a little about the importance of Santa Rosa in Viterbo from the display on the wall.

Palazzo dei Priori is beautiful any time of the day or night. We lived in the historic part of Viterbo. So for us to go to Palazzo dei Priori was easy. In 5-10 minutes you are there. You walk through Viterbo where every step brings you something new to watch and enjoy.

What a great idea to use this magnificently-frescoed building as a townhall/courtroom, but open up the most splendid section to visitors; and to do such a great job of conservation/restoration. Well done, Viterbo!

Having parked and walked into this main square and after admiring the architecture we set off on the route shown on the map at one corner of the square which guides you to the other historic sites that Viterbo has to offer.

Nice place to walk to for an amazing view of Viterbo and some great architecture. You can see the Cathedrale di San Lorenzo, and also look down to the awakening sculpture below. Definitely a beautiful historical spot to see.
