Pop in to this small but interesting museum to learn about the local tradition of the Macchina di Santa Rosa. The helpful docent (and a short film) will explain the significance of the Macchina and the story of the strong young men who compete to carry the iconic tower through the town on the feast day. You'll see replicas, photos, costumes and more.

Fabulous statue.
We did not see the parade but the statue was outside the church in Viterbo.
Have never seen such a tall statue, would be lovely to see the parade and it being carried around the streets, many of which where cobbled and sloping.

If you can be here on the 3rd September for this festa, then do so, cause it really is a great spectacle to see, this 30 metre high tower with Saint Rose on top carried by one hundred men. The main event begins at 9pm and next day there are market stalls in the streets.

An absolutely one in a kind experience. The atmosphere and the great statue they carry is incredible. If in the area during this event .... a must see! If you have small children in pushchairs I wouldn't recommend this event as the place is packed and it's difficult to move around

A small, beautiful medieval town. Visit when the festival is on to see processions through the town and the spectical of the 5 ton Machinni travel through the town!

Our visit to the Monastery of the Poor Clare's of St. Rose was perfectly timed around the feast of St. Rose. Although the actual procession of The Macchina of St. Rose had happened a few days prior, the Macchina was still on display in the square and was an incredible sight to see. To imagine this 5 ton sculpture being paraded about the town on the backs of the town's men is awe inspiring. Don't miss seeing it!!

I visited Viterbo for the first time in 1990; then again in 1996 and again in 1999. But I was never present for the feast of Santa Rosa. This year I went with my wife; my mother in law and my sister in law. We were lucky to book two rooms at a very central hotel: Viterbo Inn.
The feast is something unique; very spectacular. The build-up starts on Thursday with a corteo and presentation. In a few words the feast reaches its climax with the transportation of the Macchina of Santa Rosa by over 100 strong carriers/bearers from the Porta Romana to the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa at the other end of Viterbo. This year the Macchina was 30metres high and weighed 5111kg. The huge crowds present turn silent when the Macchina passes through the streets which are all dark except for the lights of the Macchina itself. So suggestive!! I must go again next year.

If you are not easily impressed, this should push you over the edge...the buildup begins Thursday evening and culminates with the procession of 100 men carrying the 100 ft tall Machina through the city. It is one of the most impressive sights we have experienced in many years of travel
