Its origins date back to the 13th century.
It is imposing, with fantastic architecture that has withstood the fury of time well.
It is the entrance door that leads to the historic center and certainly represents an important piece of the city's history!

I passed this very day while I was in Viterbo. It was so pretty. You can certainly see the history in the construction.

Centuries ago for a traveler arriving from Rome, Porta Romana was the entry point into the town. Porta Romana was built in 1643 replacing a much smaller gate and was lavishly decorated for the 1650 Jubilee Year, later in 1705 it was redesigned. Standing outside the walls is the best place to view the decorations on the portal, at the top of the Porta are the coats of arms of two Popes and the statue of the patron saint of Viterbo, St. Rose. The gate is narrow, the width of one small car, to the side of the gate is a archway for pedestrians. Porta Romana is located not far from the railway station Viterbo Porta Romana.

We walked to this gate on our way from Viterbo Porta Romana Train Station to our accommodation, stepping through it, makes for a grand entrance into the historical centre of Viterbo. It replaced the San Sisto gate and was built in the mid 1600’s, then restored 1705. Porta Romana along with twelve other gates, constitute part of the 11th century to 13th century, four kilometre wall surrounding the historic area of Viterbo. Chunks missing out of the gate are due to French troop shelling in December 1798. Large embellishments include the statue of Santa Rosa, patron saint of Viterbo, with the coats of arms either side of her belonging to Pope Clement XI on the left and Pope Innocent X to the right. The two smaller coats of arms, to the left belong to the Maidalchini Family and on the right are the city of Viterbo’s. It is named Port Romana, as it is on the road which leads to Rome.

This is large gate, guarding the city, one has to cross it to enter or leave the city. It is impressive, has 3 arches, the tall middle one must have been 4 stories high. It has many carvings, but the day we were there it was drizzling, and I didn't stop long enough to see all the designs.

Porta Romana represents one of the access gates to the medieval part of Viterbo. It is also the starting point of the route followed by the Santa Rosa Machine which is taken around the city every 3 September.

It constitutes the entrance to the historic center of Viterbo, nearby there is a very convenient huge free car park, the door is nice, but nothing exciting, like many others seen in Italy
