Capo Carbonara (Villasimius Region)
A day trip by car or motorbike to one of the top beaches in Sardinia’s South is a must, in particular during this April season. The coastal road with the breathtaking views of the blue sea (a real cote d’azur) is a must. Parked our car in a national park near some Camper Vans, but mostly quite … at most 6 vehicles. It’s been a bit windy and water very cold, but what an amazing beach and white sand dunes. Enjoyed the great sun shine hidden inside the dunes, behind the bushes where we had some refuge from the strong and cold wins. Although, entering dunes seems prohibited, but we were careful not to step onto some of the plants. The outdoor temperature was max. 18, but felt much colder. I pushed myself into the lake area where water temperate was warmer, than the sea at around 15 degrees. Basically no people except some RV campers with their children and doggies. What an amazing escape from a big city life. Seems a popular place for RV campers !

Beautiful walk to discover Cape Carbonara, reachable only on foot. The advice is to take a circular route starting from the Capo Carbonara beach (Usai quarry) where there is also a large free dirt car park. Take a small uphill path, quite easy, immersed in the Mediterranean scrub and follow it for a few hundred meters until it joins the much easier, but also sunnier, dirt road that leads to Cala Ravini. Before arriving at Cala Ravini you can take a small path on the right which leads in about ten minutes to Capo Carbonara where you can enjoy a 360 degree panorama in front of the Cavoli Island and its lighthouse. I recommend returning along the highest path (also marked on Google Map) which offers spectacular views on both sides of the promontory until reaching the wide dirt road in about 15 minutes that leads to the Capo Carbonara viewpoint, where the road arrives. asphalted from Villasimius, immediately above the Capo Carbonara beach.

Beautiful coastline and view. Lovely safe shallow bays and water crystal clear? Just stunning , mornings lovely and quiet for early morning jog or walk

I spend a lot of time diving and snorkeling in the Mediterranean Sea - it has spectacular scenery fro divers but a lack of large fish. Occasionally you get a glimpse of what it used to be like - the Med of Jacques Cousteau's early underwater films before rampant overfishing. This marine reserve is nearly 20 years old (age is important) and appears well managed balancing the conservation needs with those of the local community.
The scenery underwater is beautiful and accessible to the novice as it is shallow (there are guided tour operators for snorkelers and scuba) but I have seen better in the Med (Panarea, Filicudi, Amorgos, Iraklia, Tilos, Malta to list a few) but it does have the large demersal fish and they don't immediately flee on encountering you. It is an example of what can be achieved at low cost to the community and gives a bit more of a glimpse into Cousteau's Mediterranean.

We rented a boat from Tomas at Blu&Blu at the marina to get a better look at some of the islands and coves. This is a fantastic way to see the area. The hire was great value for money and money well spent. We asked him if he knew of a good dive school as we wanted to see some of the fish up close!! He put us in touch with Pro Dive which was run by a great guy called Stefano. We went out to the lighthouse and were shown some of the fantastic fish that live in this reserve. This was the highlight of my trip and would recomend that you try it.

Very close to Villasimius, a small town on the south coast, Capo Carbonara has few little, typical Sardinian beaches, and rocky islands scattered around the sea. You can either take a boat or hike on the hills near the marina in Vilassimius. The landscape is beautiful, but similar to the rest of Sardinian coast. It is nice to spend a couple of hours there and enjoy the views or sunbathe. However, it's not exceptional when compared to other similar areas.

Nice place to visit but nothing extraordinary. It is worth a climb up to the old tower with a great view over Capo Carbonara and also the beaches on the other side.

Rent a boat and see yourself, great nature. Snorkling not always necessary , fish come around to the boat looking for some food.
