    What a view!
Fabulous view with Vesuvius dominating the landscape. Really enjoyed the cable car up (very easy to find from Castellamare train station). Not great signposting at the top, which meant we wandered a little aimlessly initially. We didn't have much time up there and found a (very shabby) route with fantastic views. With a little more time we might have found some more established paths, that didn't have lots of rubble strewn across them!

    Worth a visit
Funicular station is found beside the rail sation platform. Tickets can be purchased from the train station ( E8 / person , return). Rides approximately every 20 minutes during the day. Car operator gave very good talk on way up, pointing out various things of interest and explaining about the journey. Views are fantastic from cable car, but rather limited at the top due to trees. There are walks from the station at the summit . Wear sturdy footwear as paths are sometimes uneven. There are a couple of bar/ restaurants at the summit where you can have a meal/ buy drinks/ ice creams at reasonable prices. Both have shaded areas. There is a picnic area within a minute walk which has tables/ benches - although there was rubbish strewn around this site ( bins are provided , although it appeared that wildlife had subsequently scattered discarded bags). Best photo opportunities are on the descent as you are then more aware of which views you want to capture. After the busy streets below, the summit and walks are a tranquil haven surrounded by birdsong. Take photos as we found nowhere to buy any postcards or pictures - either around base station or at summit.

    Stunning Views of Almafli
We drove from vico enquense to the view point at the top of the mountain. Google will tell you th busiest times and we would recommend visiting off peak as to avoid meeting too much traffic on the winding roads . There is a small car park at the top beside the church. The view is unbelievable and a must see when visiting Vixo Enquense. If you don't want to brave the driving their is a bus and funicular.

We were staying in Saint Agnello so hopped on the Circumvesuviana to Castellammare di Stabia station where for €8 we got a return ticket to ride the Funivia deal Monte Faito to the top. Once at the top we were a little unsure which way to go and to be honest it took a lot of wandering in different directions before we finally stumbled on the right path-we had only gone up to have a picnic with a view and at first, until you find the right spot, there are no views visible. So, for reference, we turned right out of the cable car and headed down a rough path which passed a fair few mobile phone masts and electric units-at first we thought we were lost!! Eventually though we reached some stone steps which led down...and down...and down until we passed through a cafe and its play park, crossed a small road to another cafe and headed into the garden at the back...et viola!! The view was amazing, the whole of Sorento and some of the bay of Naples bathed in sunshine, amazing oh and a very large bottle of Nastro Azzurro for €3 (much needed after that walk!!). I managed it ok in flip flops but pumps or trainers might be a better choice...obviously if you plan on exploring more, walking boots would probably be better!

Thought we would revisit this stunning place but were very disappointed to find the cable car is closed for repair! Couldn't find this info anywhere except at the station at castlemmarre!

The Monte Faito mountain is absolutely worth a visit. Very quiet, wonderful views, fresh mountain air. There are several trekking paths (they are marked, but the marks are not always easy to see).

The cable car from Castellamare is unfortunately still under renovation and has been for years, so you have to take the bus from Vico Equense. The busride is an experience in itself (hold on, it is fast and steep!) - but remember to check departure times, there are apparently 3 hours between busses!

Right opposite the cable car station at Monte Faito is a bar/restaurant. Please buy something - they don't have many costumers with the cable cars not running. Fair prices, friendly service, excellent food. You can even get a map of the paths in the area.

We walked to the Sant Michele, but if we had had better time, we would have loved to go all the way to Positano.

There are cows in the forest by the way, they were blocking the road, but they were calm and not interested in us.

Next to the train station at Castellammare is the Funivia, which takes you to Monte Faito. The funivia is cheap, the views are fabulous, and there is plenty of space to avoid the crowds of Sorrento, Pompeii etc. Also interesting flora and fauna on the various walks at the top. There are a couple of cheap cafes, one next to the funivia station at the top, the other if you turn right out of the funivia and walk down to the viewpoint.

Drove to Monte Faito about 25 Kilometers from Sorrento, approached via winding road, narrow in places. It takes about an hour to get there passing through a national park towards the last 2 Kilometers. If you set the sat nav it may take you through some narrow short cuts. To avoid this follow the directions to Naples and take the road marked with a brown sign to Monte Faito. We found this soon after crossing a bridge. Please drive right to the end where there is a bar/cafe with toilet facilities. Once you are there take a good walk around the bar and enjoy one of the best views I have seen over many years of travel to various parts of the world. The panoramic view is simply breathtaking. Please ensure you drive up on a clear day. On one side you get a clear view of Sorrento, Amalfi coast and beyond, including the island of Capri while on the other side you see the city of Naples and Mount Vesuvius beyond. Please make sure you walk up the steps on your right as you approach the cafe and over some socky area where you get a fabulus view of the city of Naples.

The cable car station is very handy if travelling on the Circumvesuviana. It is accessed from inside the Castellamare di Stabia station (which is just 20 minutes from Sorrento, 10 minutes from Vico and 10 minutes from Pompeii) and is just a few metres from the train station. Both the car going up the mountain and the car coming back down seemed timed well to connect to the Circumvesuviana if you come from the Sorrento direction and return there (about 4 minutes wait for the cable car and about 6 minutes wait for the Circumvesuviana).

The views on the 8-minute ride are spectacular. You see all of Naples and Vesuvius while riding up. Once at the top you can see most of the Bay of Naples: Capri, Sorrento, Vico Equense, Castellamare, Pompeii, Naples, and Ischia and all the surrounding villages.

On a hot day the drop in temperature and the breezes at the top are very refreshing. It felt about 10 degrees cooler at the top. The vegetation is entirely different at the top and you really feel that you are out in nature. From the cable car station, you walk 400 meters to the belvedere (viewpoint) where there are three bars and a hotel. If you head east of the cable car station, there is a two-hour round trip hike up to a small church.

I read other reviews that complained about litter. We saw none. Threre are some telecommunications towers for the first 80 metres past the cable car station, but after that you are surrounded by beautiful pine trees and views.

We were there over lunch time and it was surprisingly uncrowded for such a beautiful place that is so easy to get to. You can take a public bus up (1 hour from Vico Equense) or drive up (16 km on a very twisty slow road from Vico).

Highly recommended.

if you have the confidence to roam about on your own here are a few tips for sorrento arrea..1 catch the train early sorrento to vico equense.then just outside station catch bus to monte faito`to the top where the bus stops outside st angello hotel.the views are outstanding and you can have tastes of italy and wine at a reasonable price.or walk to the little church from the path next to cable car looking down on napoli.the cable car has been out of action. but if working you go on train to castle mare de stabia.the cable car is inside the station..from sorrento catch bus or walk to st agata visit smoking cat orlando bar for good prices on drinks and they always come with nibbles the family are lovely and give you a warm welcome.infact all the little villages at termini eughenes.or angelos bar at massa.its there to be found.

This place is a must for a wonderful day out. Take the funicular from Castellammare di Stabia up to Monte Faito for €8 return fare. Once at the top turn right and amble along a dirt path stopping to photograph the Bay of Naples below along the way. Then descend the downward steps (a lot of them) until you reach the road which has a couple of bars serving very reasonable priced food and drink. Across the road is the furthest bar/cafe, which offers fabulous views of Sorrento and the Isle of Capri, as well as Vico Equense straight ahead. Again the prices are extremely reasonable and much cheaper than in the resorts below. Example, a bottle of white wine from the fridge was €7....a good deal to enjoy whilst basking in the sunshine with amazing views.
Pick a clear day for the best long distant views.

Would love to have given a review of a lovely sunny day but the cable car closed at the end of September, I wish the website had told us that before we wasted our time and money getting to the station. Monte Faito's loss was Herculaneum's gain as we spent the rest of the day there instead.

This place has the most fantastic views and is very relaxing. The cable car takes you to the top and then there are many steps to walk down before you get to the viewing area where there are a few cafes and accommodation. Great walks to be had or seating where you can relax and read or take lots of photos as it is beautiful. The Naples/Sorrento train takes you right there and it is so cheap to travel on the train. A definite must see if you are in that area, it was a real treat and one of the highlights of our holiday.
