possibly the highlight of the holiday to unexpectedly find an art gallery, housed in an art deco mansion, that is open until 10pm each evening, right on the sea front. 8 Euros entrance fee to peruse a fine collection of local artists' work from the 19th/20th Century, plus an exhibition of guest artists. A wonderful way to end the evening after a pizza and a lovely stroll on the promenade. It's air conditioned too. Staff were exceptionally helpful

LOVED this gallery

This visit was a real highlight of our trip. The building itself is gorgeous - huge with lots of space and its relatively quiet - you really feel separate from the hordes of tourists that you encounter at all the major sites. The collection is brilliantly curated - so thoughtfully put together and displayed. We enjoyed experiencing some new Italian artists that we didn't know. But also seeing some of the greats of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Cleverly put together with some more modern works. Can't recommend this one enough.

A must-see if you are in Viareggio
Feb 2018 • Couples
This lovely small municipal museum, located right on the Piazza Mazzini is a true gem and, on a Friday evening, we nearly had the place to ourselves. Housed in a building that is beautiful in it's own right, the collection includes extensive galleries with the work of Italian expressionist, Lorenzo Viani, as well as a delightful exhibit of the work of painter and graphic artist Uberto Bonetti, the creator of Canavale di Viareggio's Burlamacca.

If you are in Viareggio, it's a must. When you pay you can, for just a couple more euros, buy a ticket that includes the Villa Paolina Bonaparte, which is worth a visit, and the Maritime Museum which, for me, was not.

a focused gem for modern art

This richly informative museum is housed in a stunning Liberty building in the center of town, the Palazzo delle Muse. It hosts more than 3,000 works of art by 750 artists, Italian and international, from the early 20th century; about 300 works are on display at any given time. With advance notice, an English-speaking guide can be arranged, as signage is not foreign-friendly. The price will depend on the number of people and the length of the visit. With advance planning, visitors can also attend free lectures, screenings, and special events mounted by GAMC.

We weren't expecting much. Downstairs is nothing much - a bunch of college age kids hanging out lowered our expectations. But upstairs was a wonderful and enormous exhibit from their print collections. Both Italian and artists from other countries. Excellent English signage and explanations. A real treat. Easily reachable from Lucca by bus in 45 minutes.
