I come here every year. It is true that the beach is payed.
But there is another option. If you are at the harbour of Viareggio, you see a wall. Behind that wall there is a big and free beach. You can drive around the harbour to get there. It is a big, clean beach and the water is beautiful. You can walk for miles there. If you walk a few miles, you will get to a little village. There you also have payed and free beaches. It is beautiful to go true the big forrest which is there. In the water that streams true the forest, live al kinds of animals, such as turtles.
If you walk all the way true, you will get to a lovely and calm beach...

Very nice beach except its expensive. In theory you are legally entitled to sit between the low and high water tide. However in this beach some local authority has usurped normal legal rights claiming this area is required for emergency vehicles doing life guarding. Mum decided to sit down anyhow, a local self appointed life guard asked us to move on and when she didn't moved the life guard went off and returned a few minutes with some form of police person brandishing a fire arm and forced us and others to move. The alternative is to pay the 21.00 euro per day or go down to the public beach wichiis right beside the port and kept in a filthy condition. A bit of a racket really, I know the beach has to be cleaned but in Spain and France this rarely goes on. have stayed in Lido de Jesola near Venice and the Hotel gave out free beach passes.

OK - so if you have ever been to the Caribbean - you are unlikely to like this beach. We went to Viarregio because of good reviews and it was a waste of time. We spent our two days doing day trips to Lucca and Pisa (both of which are well worth the 20 minute train trip). The beach is brown sand - and while clean - the water is very murky. It is like a sand bar and you can walk way out - but if you have kids - beware as you will be renting chairs (25 euros for 2 chairs) that are miles away from the shoreline. All the chairs close to the water go to "season" holders. We had just come from Santa Margherita and the rocky beach there was much cleaner with blue - not brown! - water. Forget the sand beach - head north - or south to other beach resorts.

Just back from Viareggio in Italy - what a rip off - holiday travellers are not allowed to lie on the beach - you are obliged to rent a parasol/ sunlounger for approx 15-20 euros per day for two persons. What local itialian government gave permission for local seafront hotels/restaurants to start owing sections of the beach.
If you intend to visit - it's best to rent a bike as the free beach was about a mile from our hotel.
The resort is not what I expected although you can travel by train to Florence and a nearby town of Lucca is worth the visit and seemed a lot more reasonable for food than Viareggio itself.
If you want to get the train to Rome its about 3 hour journey costing 66 euro per person return
The food was not great in Viareggio - any restaurant we visited was expensive as well - we were obliged to go eat in a chinese restaurant on two different nights and tolerate not very good food on the rest of the evenings in local restaurants
A resort which is expensive and not worth the money -

Miles of good safe sandy beach but all privately owned by hotels except a couple of very small strips which are free for locals. We had to pay 29 euro PER DAY to use the beach, this included 1 sun lounger, 2 deck chairs, 1 upright seat and a parasol. You will not get siting down for seconds without being approached by lifeguards who patrol their areas and will move you on. Very expensive especially for families. We stayed at Hotel Esplanade and had to use adjoining hotels area of beach - also could only use back couple of rows away from sea.

We had lunch here and found the menu to be very interesting. The service was very good and so was the food we ordered. An interesting option in the area.

We walked for miles along the beach here. Just redaing the reviews it would appear that we were lucky to be there before the season opened & someone tried to charge us for sitting.
