About
Museo del Paesaggio presents to the public the most important collection of works of art on Lake Maggiore. Paintings and sculptures, from the end of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, tell of the territory’s capacity to attract and host artists of international importance: Daniele Ranzoni, Paolo Troubetzkoy, Mario Tozzi, and Arturo Martini, among others.

If you are in the region of Stresa on Lake Maggiore then catch a ferry boat to Pallanza. Head up to the Museum. There is a fantastic exhibition of sculpture by Gipsoteca Troubetzkoy. We had never heard of him but his work is outstanding. There are full life examples of many world famous people as well as smaller exquisite models. The sculptures are beautifully presented. There is second floor with art work but we were so taken back by the sculptures we gave it a miss.

This museum is at the top of the Via Ruga, by the Tourist Information Office. The ground floor contains detailed sculptures by local sculptor, Paolo Troubetzkoy. The upper floor contains a collection of very nice paintings, mostly of local places. Allow between 60 amd 90 minutes to visit.

In a wonderful garden is located, Museo del Paesaggio, a park with sculptures and benchs, and the palace of the Museum is a splendour; many sculptures and very nice paintings; often there are special expositions; very relaxing, merit a visit.

This is a gem of a museum with lots of interesting events. When I visited in September the exhibition was showing the works of Paolo Troubetkoye. Fantastic works all gathered together. I was so pleased to have been there at the right time

The museum is closed until Spring 2016 but you can see some of the collection at a nearby building. The exhibit showcases a large collection of ex voto or expressions of thanks, in painting form. This particular exhibit, which runs until the beginning of September, is very well done. It includes local photos of the farmers and ties them in to the ex voto paintings, even grouping them into categories of accident, disaster or particular form of thanks. Hypochondriacs or those prone to worrying might want to give it a miss since the range of accidents and variety of farm implements and animals involved is rather wide. Some of the paintings are very old, going back as far as 230 years and it's interesting to see how they chronicle certain historical events such as World Wars I and II. No explanations in English but things are pretty self-explanatory. It was a little bit difficult to find the building itself despite what should have been a clear map posted on the museum door and directing you to the temporary location. The best way to get there is to walk down Via Ruga (the street where the permanent museum is), turn right at the main street, turn right again at Largo Tacchini and follow that around to the end (small square), where you take a right up the hill to the entrance. Limited hours, from 16:00-19:00, closed Mondays.

It was a very hot day, we were hoping for air con, there wasn’t any!
Interesting sculpture downstairs, and paintings upstairs, however we were so hot we couldn’t really do it justice, unfortunately.

We went to this museum mainly to escape the heat of the day, and were so glad we did! The exhibition of Paolo Troubetskoy's sculptures (who I'd never heard of, but is local) was excellent and very interesting. The upper floor was less my area of interest, but still obviously well put together.
Signs and information throughout is in both Italian and English, and they also provided pamphlets in further languages. It was 5 euros entry, but if you stay in the area for more than three nights, some hotels provide a discount card - we used this and it made it only 3 euros each. For which we stayed for over two hours! But you could go through quicker if you were short of time.

Coming from Locarno we decided to make a stop in Verbania and give this museum a try, although we were sceptical at the beginning, since sculptures normally are not too interesting for us, however...
+ really enjoyed the exhibition about the sculptures of Troubetzkoy, some great pieces
+ good price
+ perfect to combine it with a walk to the lakeside
- the information texts on the walls all said the same, more or less

The picture shown on this page is of the Vila Giulia, where there is currently (December 2015) a small temporary exhibition supporting the Winter Camellia Festival, The main collections (painting, sculpture, and archaeology) of the Museo del Paesaggio are in the Viani Dugnani Palace (see other pictures) which is currently closed for renovations. My wife and I have an interest in a specific sculpture by Troubetzkoy and were kindly allowed to make a special appointment to see some of his creations in store. They are stunning works of art and when they are on public display again (hopefully Spring 2016) this museum should be on every visitor's must-see list.
