A really Beautiful place
Aug 2020
It's so beautiful. Why does it have so much more character than Lake Geneva/Leman?
Italian style. Look at the beautiful buildings/mansions dotted around.
easy & not too expensive to explore the lake using the regular ferry service.
Only an hour away from Switzerland.

I would recommend a few weeks together including a visit to
austria, switzerland and italy. I stayed in Wilderswil, at theAlpenrose, and ate in the hotel, but in a real swiss chalet
to sleep. This way it was more of a real experience. Wilderswil
has breathtaking views, and is central for walks and travelling.

Lacus Verbanus
Dec 2019 • Solo
This is the ancient name of this large lake on the north of Italy, it splits Lombardia, Piemonte and Canton Ticino Switzerland.
The climate is mild in both winter and summer , producing Mediterranean climate wonderful for vegetation.
The most beautiful gardens are on the many palaces and ville on its rivers

This quite amazing lake - with beautiful vista all around
Oct 2019
We travelled from Luino to Arona and then onwards up to Locarno. A lovely drive with plenty to see. The Italian part of the lake is probably nicer along the roads. Once you head for Swiss the building don't do the surrounding countryside any justice. Mind the road though - narrow and most drivers taking a sporty race line.

Glad we chose Stresa as our base
Sep 2019
This large lake provides vistas of the Alpine foothills and views of the Alps when the clouds cooperate. Highly recommend staying at a hotel within walking distance of the main Stresa ferry dock. Regular ferries are your best option to explore the nearby islands for shopping and amazing palaces. Stresa is located near the center of Italy's second largest lake. It is a 3.5 hour ferry ride (including many port stops) to Lucarno, Switzerland at the NE corner of the lake.

Take the tour while in Stresa to the three islands
Sep 2019
Isola Madre was the first on our tour with a palace dating back about 4 centuries and beautiful grounds with birds and tropical plants and wild life. Lots of walking but special views of a palace and it's four hundred year old furniture.

Saw from the train on previous Rail holiday and had to book!
Sep 2019
Based in Stresa we had a program of tours by boat and train and what a spectacular lake it is, different to Como and Garda.
Highlights have been the Mottarone cable car and Isola Pescatore (separate reviews).
Still to go on Centovali Express to locarno in Switzerland then back by boat to Stresa and a trip to Lake Orta.

Worth a trip

Lago Maggiore is a very nice lake to visit. And you must se the Borromeo islands. If you like outdoor activities, go up to the Mottarone, rent a bike and enjoy the mountain.

Popular summer vacation hotspot
Sep 2019
The second largest lake in Italy, very popular summer vacation spot for the Europeans, best is to visit after or before the European summer holiday. The lake is beautiful with islands dotted on the lake. It is easy to visit these islands by shuttle boats. Daily ticket is available for 1, 2 or 3 islands for £8, 12, 15 respectively. Tickets are available at the kiosk by the lakefront in Stresa. Stresa has the infrastructure to accommodate all the visitors needs. There are towns on the lakefront with choices of accommodations. Best is to do the research first.

Location for holiday is ideal !!
Aug 2019
If you're looking for a holiday based on phenomenal nature, beauty, and the peaceful tranquility afforded mountain ranges and mountain lakes, then Lake Maggiore is an extraordinary choice ! The scenery is beyond belief and the access coming in from Milan airport couldn't be easier or more straightforward. Most of the local towns / areas along the lake are approximately 1-hour or less by car on a wonderful autobahn (or a bit slower by smaller roads along the lake). Milan airport is a major airport but very well organized, clean, friendly staff and signage, and as far as airports go, it's essential "painless". I noted many young families with young children so one the side, it appears to be a young family oriented destination however, from my opinion, i would find it less than ideal (for young children) because there is a lot of walking and visiting of ancient castles, located on local picturesque islands (accessed by great ferry system), etc so for most children, this is not interesting and very tiring to be taken along for full days of exploring. That's just my opinion because as I said, there were many young families with lots of very well behaved young children / toddlers. Lastly, there are a seeming-less endless number of hotels along this enormous lake ranging from 1-star through majestic 5-star venues. Be careful and ask questions (begore regiastering) regarding the neighborhood and neighboring hotels, bars, etc. We were unlucky and stayed at the Hotel Belvedere in Verbania and unbeknownst to us, they are located directly next door to a restaurant / bar that has EVERY night (i.e. 7-days/week) an outdoor live rock music band that plays till at least 11:30 PM and worst case, they played till almost 1 AM ? Upon "complaining", we were told to "lighten up .... it's August so have a good time during this holiday time". You can imagine the reception to that sort of customer service !! This review however is about the area and I cannot recommend Lake Maggiore any higher !! We are determined to return !
