We spent a morning hiking part of the trail, in each direction, from the station of the tram. The views were incredible and the little stores were charming. The cathedral/monastery was amazing. We were with all of our adult children and grand children. Everyone enjoyed the spectacular views. It was a cold winter day but the sun was out and the hiking kept us warm. I wish that we could have spent more time there but we had to leave after about three hours.

We went on a very overcast weekday and only ran into a couple other visitors. We had no idea really what to expect but it made for a very nice walk up to the Sanctuary (very beautiful church) and back down. It's really off the beaten path.

The visit to the “Sacro Monté” would not have been the same without meeting Vitorio Valenta, the information manager on the site. Incredible deciphered visit, from the origin of this place to the symbolism of the statues. A journey behind the scenes of History! Visits as we like them, unplanned encounters, human exchanges which make up the charm of Italy, of this city of Orta and this timeless site.
Thanks Vitorio!

Beautiful area. Beautiful church. This area is a small part of Varese reachable by bus line C then you can walk the main path with the 14 stations representing each an event of life and death of Jesus Christ. The view from up here is absolutely stunning. You can see by good weather 3 lakes and Milan. Few hotels and restaurants offer a possibility to stay in this very quiet part of Lombardia

The path winds its way uphill, sometimes steeper, sometimes less steeply, past the 14 chapels. When I got to the top, I was particularly fascinated by the mountain village of Santa Maria del Monte. You can feel, hear and see that village life still goes on here, the locals are in the streets, chatting, the "garbage collectors" come by, construction workers repair things here and there, the priest greets you in a friendly manner. Very authentic and it didn't really feel touristy (at 11 in the morning). Great! Going down in the rain, the cobblestones were a bit slippery, but grass is growing over the cobblestones at the edge, so there is a bit more grip. Be careful though!

A beautiful uphill route that leads to the top of the Sacro Monte. It is very beautiful at the top, spectacular views and a beautiful little village. The road is not long, arrived by bus, but it is all uphill and in the heat it is a bit heavy. The various chapels along the road are worth a stop.

A UNESCO site without a car park worthy of being called such, because getting there is already not very easy with signs that don't exist, and Google Maps which has never been there, and no connection either. Back in Varese, finding the funicular is like improvising a treasure hunt, directions are always zero, and even those online are written by idiots. I gave up after hours of research and attempts that took me to places where there wasn't even a plan for a funicular. Wasted day, but I would gladly do a lot to anyone who cares about these things.

If you are staying in Varese, you cannot miss visiting this UNESCO site. It is worth starting from the bottom on foot, from the first chapel to go up. It's not that demanding and the landscape and churches are worth it. Once you reach the top, the sacred mountain offers spectacular views and a sanctuary that deserves an in-depth visit.

A true pilgrimage to walk up the Sacre Monto and visit each of the 14 chapels. So much tought and design went into each one.
It can be a deep spiritual experience to pray at each of the chapels and think about our Saviour.

Went their without much expectation but its wonderful! Brings you closer to god in this beautiful environment between nature and architecture. The wait up by foot is a bit tough when its very hot but worth it. Parking down is a big issue as usual in this area but i finally managed some how. At the top the church is simply beautiful, dont miss the small museum next to it and specially the crypt that is so unique! Several nice local restaurant with beautiful view to make the experience total! Highly recommend

Buongiorno.

Is there any provision for people with walking difficulties?
Written August 11, 2019
you have to get in the car to the square of the sacred mountain and then from there you can visit the church of santa maria del monte since the climb from the sacred road of the chapels is difficult if done on wheels or otherwise because it is all in stone

Grazie
Written May 9, 2019

Hello, I am planning a walking holiday in Lombardy in June and I would love any advice. Where should we base ourselves? We will be flying into Bergamo. Varese sounds wonderful but would we have enough trails for 4 or 5 days walking or should we move around?
Thank you.
Written January 4, 2018
I would suggest moving around. Lago Maggiore is within a reasonable distance, Lake Como about 1-1/2 hrs away, and there are a number of Sacro Monte sites in the region as well.
