While not necessarily an architectural attraction (although it is a very nice church built in the 30s), Sanctuario Madonna della Guardia is one of three churches you should visit in Tortona (the other two are the Duomo and Santa Maria Canale). Luigi Orione, the priest who helped build this church, was canonized in 2004. Saint Luigi Orione was beloved in Tortona for his good works, including the orphanage and home for the aged that he built next to the church. As you tour the church you'll see sacred heart plaques along the stairway walls, each one attesting to a miracle that a congregant attributed to him. His body is on view in the church, there is a crypt below to explore, and some lovely stained glass. And, of course, there is the 60ft Madonna that tops the cathedral, that women of the parish helped gild by melting down their wedding rings.

This cathedral is absolutely one of the top attractions of the city, the church itself is majestic built on the 20s' and after few years it has been expanded by the behest of Don Orione which nowaday became Saint, with the addition of the tower and the Virgin Mary on top of it which reaches a height of about 60 meters. Surely a brief visit to the church and the remains of the Saint, preserved in a glass case (in my opinion a bit 'macabre), then continue with a visit to the tower. There is a lift which is in operation daily, if I'm not going to get wrong the cost to lift up it's around € 0.50 cents. Once at the top the view is absolutely stunning, 360-degree panoramic views all over the nearby hills. In my view, however, all this is a bit 'left in carelessness. We should value more what we have to offer to the tuorists. Don't forget to visit the crypt underneath
