In the Trentino Alto Adige region, in the heart of the Dolomites, one of the most important churches of Selva Val Gardena is the parish church “Santa Maria Assunta”, located in the center of the town. It is also called St. Maria ad Nives.
It was originally a chapel built as early as 1503 by Wilhelm von Wolkenstein. It soon became a destination for many pilgrims and therefore had to be expanded several times.
The bell tower, which still stands out over the roofs of the town today, was built in 1678.
The construction of the neo-Gothic church began in 1870. During the enlargements that occurred later, the original hall was demolished but the historical furnishings of artistic value were preserved, such as the main altar dating back to the 17th century. The altar area from 1670 has been maintained and still houses a copy of the sacred icon, attributed to Lukas Cranach the Younger, of the Madonna and Child, which was made for the Kreuzkirche in Dresden or perhaps for a church in Innsbruck.
In 1988 the nave was replaced with a modern construction.
The nave is a modern octagonal-shaped structure dating back to the 20th century. The bell tower is on the cemetery side. The bell tower has four single-lancet windows and the apex is a sharp pyramid with an octagonal base, typical of South Tyrolean religious architecture.
Lovely. Worth visiting it .
