Another cathedral in Italy that surprises you in size and beauty considering the fact it is not in a major city. I thought that we would zip in for 5-10 minutes max. We spent maybe 20-30 minutes and we could have spent more, but we got out late and we wanted to see the Castle. Google now says it is closed permanently. I could not find any info on that online or almost any info about the cathedral, itself. Not everything is on the net. It would be a shame if it had closed. Many churches have either closed, have very limited days and hours open or you can’t find out what the status is, even if you go to the church and look for some indication on when it is open. This is particularly true in Italy. Even if you are not Christian, it’s a shame that these wonderful buildings are not even open to be seen. Oh well.

don't forget to visit the choir - right behind the main altar. Inlaid woods from the XVIII century...

We have visited Savona while on a cruise. You can reach the most interesting places by feet. If it's a sunny day wear a hat and start your walk through. This cathedral was built between 1589 and 1605 and houses a remarkable carved wooden chancel which was commissioned by Savona-born Pope Julius II. The cathedral houses also St Valentine's Martyr's relics. If you find some extra time the cloiser is worth a visit.

Architectural locations are of great interest to us. This is one of my favorites on our journey since leaving the US in March. The facade is so wide I needed to go to a street at an angle to achieve a full view. The workmanship of the pieces shows exactly what kind of artisans were employed in creating this masterpiece. I'd allow an hour, really, to take in all the beauty.

Italy is famous for its duomos - and here we have another solid example. Nice exteriors of the entrance area, balanced and not duo-color floors, some nice detailing around the altar - but mind that numerous "details" are just painted. You will not go Savona driven by the idea of visiting the Cattedrale di Nostra Signora Assunta, but you do not want to walk by when you are there.

The Assumption Cathedral is the main center of Catholic worship in Savona, located not far from the Sistine Chapel. In 1528, Savona surrendered to the Genoese who built a fort on Priamar hill, demolishing the 9th century cathedral. The present cathedral's construction began in 1584 and was completed in 1605, and most likely designed by Battista Sormano. The Cathedral measures 61 meters by 39 meters in the shape of a Latin cross divided into three naves. A bell tower on the right side was finished in 1929.

After waiting for mass to end, we were able to tour this magnificent edifice and view the artwork including the religious statues.

The whole experience inspired feelings of solemnity. There were many local families mixed in with European tourists enjoying the thrill of lighting candles in front of the altars dedicated to the Virgin Mary and other saints.

This historic Catholic Cathedral is a must see for many reasons. It's a spiritual experience during which you learn about events that have shaped Northern Italian culture and society.

In stark contrast to the small Sistine Chapel which charges admission and does not allow even non-flash pictures; admission to the Cathedral is free and there is no problem taking pictures of the altar and ceiling frescos.

This is the "new" cathedral of the town, the original one was on the fortress on the sea destroyed by the genoa army during the infamous occupation in the 16th century, the new one contains some of the original and most precious pieces of the original, Savona gave the world two popes "Giulio II" and "Sisto IV" (yes, the one famous for the cappella sistine in Rome by Michelangelo) and Hosted pope "Pio VII" during his forced retire in Napoleon becoming the third Holy See with Rome and Avignon, Guides visits to the Pope apartments are organized in the weekends but you have to check in the cathedral because of the limited availability, th pictures speak the themselves, a visit it's a must here.

An old church with a mix of styles and still very much frequented by an active parish. It is set on a nice square, not far from where the old papal palace stands, with a flourished facade and quite imposing interiors

Large sober church. Nothing special if there are beautiful baptismal funds, perfectly highlighted and enlightened.
