Came across this small Crafts shop when walking from Selva to Ortisei in the Val Gardena area of the Italian Dolomites. It is situated in the small village of Santa Cristina on an old railway line which in 1960 was converted into a fairly level walking and cycling trail. It is well out of the village centre and on its own as such. To find it walk the old railway line from the village church towards Selva and it will appear on the left. Although the family name is Demetz the shop sign says "Albert Kunsthandwerk". All the hand crafted work created by Albert is made on site and as you walk through the door the working area appears on your right. There are some wonderful creations mainly in wood but also Glass and other materials. They have all been meticulously hand painted. Considering Italy is now becoming quite expensive because of the Euro the prices in Albert's shop seemed quite reasonable compared to many of the more commercial outlets. We bought a very fragile glass Christmas ornament which Albert kindly boxed for us and then delivered to our Hotel a few miles away FOC. If you are in the area like walking and are on the lookout for crafts to take back home then have a look at what Albert Demetz has to offer.
