We travelled to Sansepulcro (and to Arezzo and Monterchi) to view masterpieces of Piero della Francesca.

The civic museum in Sansepulcro contains two masterpieces - and viewing is quiet, uncrowded, and an experience of contemplation.

Worth a journey !

My wife, mother in law and I visited Sansepolcro for a day from Perugia. The Museo Civico was at the top of our list of places to visit and it was well worth it. One of Piero della Francesca's finest works, 'Resurrection' was undergoing some significant restoration. We were able to view the piece from some tricky angles and to learn about the restoration work. The remainder of the gallery housed some outstanding work. Being able to watch some of the restoration taking place was a really great experience. We were able to appreciate the painstaking work that ensures these phenomenal pieces of artwork are maintained as close to their original form as possible. Spent just over an hour in the gallery and would certainly go again to see the completed Resurrection restoration.

The Civic Museum has fabulous displays of art and every thing is clearly labelled. There are wonderful mosaics from a deconsecrated church to be seen on the top floor but these could easily be missed as the signpost is fairly obscure.
If there is no time to view the whole museum one can view its most famous painting from the top of the flight of steps next to the tourist office building.

People go to Sansepolcro to see Piero della Francesca's Ressurection. Unfortunately they got some mostly unremarkable paintings from nearby churches and put them around Piero's masterpiece to justify their charging EUR 8 to see it. To make matters worse, Piero's fresco was under restoration and barely visible at all, something they conveniently didn't mention when I bought the ticket.

Piero della Francesca is simply great! This museum is an historic place, which displays "in situ" the famous fresco of the Resurrection. Nice tradition, linked to the public character of this palace: the public can see it, as well, from outside, through a glass door. Other frescoes and an polyptichon of Pietro are displayed and well presented in this quiet museum. Juste one regret: for unexplainable reasons, like in many other places in Italy, custodians prohibit photographs (no reason: nobody uses flash anymore and copyright is certainly exhausted after 5 centuries).

Sansepolcro is an old-fashioned, out of the way, hill town with an old world feeling. There is an inexpensive parking lot at the base of hill and it's an easy walk up to the museum with sights of kids riding their bikes in the square and people with market baskets. They are very proud that Piero della Francesca was born here and continued to take part in civic affairs all his life. For me, seeing Sansepulcro made it clearer to me that Piero was a sort of rustic genius. The paintings come out of complete faith and a life of simplicity. There are two of his paintings in the museum (and not much else) but they are worth the trip (and the fee!). The Madonna della Misericordia is an oil painting and a good warm-up for the main event because one can see what brilliant colors he used. The Resurrection might have been a much brighter painting when it was first done in 1450--but frescoes fade. So use your imagination. It is monumental and we as viewers are privileged to see this vision while the soldiers sleep heavily in front of the tomb. I was more bothered by the spatial inconsistencies of the soldiers' bodies than I have been in seeing reproductions. Maybe that is because, with the fresco placed above eye-level, while Christ dominates the picture, I notice the soldiers more than I have before.

What a sad little place. On the first floor (ground level) there was very little of interest. Mind you, The Resurrection is quite a masterpiece, and if the fee for entering was just two Euros, then...maybe okay. But some of the artwork was missing...and they used masking tape to cover up the names of missing pieces. The dreary staff followed us around as if we were contemplating a heist.
In the basement, things got a little more interesting with artifacts dating back 7,000 years...and items from tombes from the first or second century.
We are mostly greatly disappointed with the price, missing items, and unsmiling staff.

As with many Italian museums this one was worth a diversion which is now taking us to the coast. The newly restored Della Francesco Polyptych of Mercy is remarkably graphic and the museum is a delight. The bookshop with clever little 2020 calendars for one euro was very good too. See elsewhere for what to do when the place closes for lunch 1 to 2.30

Being a fan of Piero della Francesca, I have visited this museum several times, each time coming out more in awe of his works. The two ones presented therein (there are not many in total, around the world) are among the most perfect of his production; well preserved and adequately presented (one may argue that they may even have been better in their original settings). A small museum, contains also a few other valuable works which suffer from the proximity of Piero's masterpieces. A visit is definitely worth the trip, and perhaps worth a travel to Italy for this purpose. In the latter case, I may suggest to join some other Piero's masterpieces in the neighborhood (Urbino, Monterchi and Arezzo).
