About
The gate linked the town with the outside world. It was largely rebuilt in the mid-19th century to a design by Luigi Antonio Baruffaldi. Above the gate rises the belfry of the nearby parish church (Santa Maria).

This is a gorgeous area of Riva. You'll find designer clothes stores, leather and glass shops, restaurants and bars in abundance when you walk through this gateway.

The Piazza Cavour was one of the 'finds' of a very enjoyable sojourn in Riva where one finds a beautiful parochial church, excellent cafes, a lively small market and the remnants of a medieval city wall all to hand in a small central area of the town. The attractiv Baroque church of Maria Assunta was rebuilt in 1728 with its single nave having nine altars and it also has an impressive dome fresco. The Cafe Italia is one of the best in Riva and is adjacent to the old city gate and beside a small fruit market that arguably sells the best cherries in the region. The San Michele Gate is a medieval masterpiece containing a belfry for the parish chapel. While having coffee here one morning the bells rang for a church service : very moving and impressive!

The best entry to medieval riva del Garda is through this gate...it leads to all things riva. We rent an apartment at piazza Cavour #3 and watch the activities unfold from our window. Fresh fruit arrives every day by 7 and cheese and flowers and fish on other days. The old ladies attend mass every morning and every evening the locals meet at bar Maroni to discuss their day. This place is the heart of old riva. Away from the lovely waterfront and tourists....life happens here

Riva Del Garda is ideal for stolling around and I would certainly say go and explore. The caffe and eating out culture is a delight. The old town is easily discovered and if you are prepared to wander with your eyes open you will not be disappointed.

Whilst in Riva I lingered here, admiring the architecture. The buildings have a wonderful colour palette of subtle, earthy tones. I drank too many italian coffees and took hundreds of photographs. It's just a place to soak up the atmosphere of the region. I absolutely loved it.

Interesting evidence of the town's past, in small quiet square on the way to the main shopping pedestrianised area.

It's the main gate (medieval) that leads you Into the city. It's a beautiful gate and well worth a stop and a picture. Can't miss it all locals knows where it is.

We were in Riva Del Garda for a few hours being on a Riviera Travel tour to Lake Garda and the Dolomites. Prior to us spending a few hours in Riva Del Garda our guide had told us to look out for the San Michele city gate which was connected to what remained of the city walls from earlier times. While we didn't go out of our way to find it we did indeed come across it as it provdes one way from getting from the old town through to the more modern portion.
