The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

OK, just another old castle, bastion thing perched on the hillside? Well, yes and no. It occupies a prime location with stunning views across Riva del Garda and the lake. It’s a good 30 minutes walk up, aided by zig-zags all the way on a well-prepared walking surface, and just 15 minutes to get back down again. There’s a great... More

Brilliant views of the lake well worth the uphill climb. Try and go even further up to the war memorial

A winding path leads you slowly but surely up to Il bastione. Owing to ill health I was grateful for the regular benches that are paced on most bends. The varying views across Riva are stunning. Il Bastione itself is an interesting piece of architecture and there is a great bar!

If you are interested in history and want to walk off the excesses of food and wine try a hike up to Bastione from Riva del Garda. Built in the 16thC the tower has been sympathetically partially restored and offers safe access inside its several levels. Attached to the tower is a great restaurant / bar which offers reasonably priced... More

Half an hour walk, good paved path and worth the effort to see the views. It's an old building and free access inside. There is cafe next to it.

It is a long steep walk up to the bastion but well worth the effort. Once you reach the top and sit with a cold beer in your hand and look out across the panaramic view over the town and water, you will soon forget the effort you had to make to get there. Walking around the bastion itself is... More

The Bastion is a spectacular sight , but not good for any but the fit , but there are many other places to visit around the lake . The lake has a road all around it with a lot of tunnels down the west side with lake views through arches . The road was built by Mussolini and must have... More
