About
The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

Great views
Sep 2020
An easy walk up to The Bastion as the funicular wasn't open till 11. Fantastic views from the top with a very nice cafe where you can get good coffee and admire Riva from on high.
Be careful to check what time the funicular opens, on the day we went it wasn't till 11 as it was closed for maintenance. Very busy by the time we left.

Worth the view!

It was definitely worth it! The view was amazing and the restaurant looked really nice although we didn't eat there. You can hike up even further which is nice and you can take nice photos.

Awesome food with a stunning view
Aug 2020 • Family
Book and arrive early to be seated on the terrace with the best view. Good choice of dishes with tasty combinations of fish and eat with Trentino tipical flavors such as honeys and erbs.

Had made a reservation 4 days in advance and there was a technical defect on arrival! Didn't get a call with the bad news! Very irritating!

Worth the walk.
Sep 2019
About 30 minutes to walk up to the Batione from the road. Uphill climb with benches on the way so you can rest! Also, there are 2 vehicle tracks which are easier to walk on than the cobbles. Views from the top really good. If you walk around the back of the Bastione you can access the upper layer. Much easier and quicker walking back down!

Well worth the climb
Aug 2019
Beautiful view down from the Bastion after a steep but well paved climb up the mountain. They are currently working on a funicular to transport people up to it and the noise from the work somewhat distracted from the ambience and tranquillity of the setting.
