I walked as a pilgrim with my friend from Rieti to the Vatican, following the trail of St. Francis of Assisi - my friend started in Assisi, and deserves major kudos for doing the entire walk. The trail was mostly clearly marked, but we were aided by a GPS program we acquired in Rieti to keep to the trail. We stayed in fabulous agriturismos and small hotels along the way. I will not deny that I hated my backpack for the first three days, but somehow I made it through and would not trade the experience for anything! Go! Do it! Received our Testimonium at the Vatican after presenting our Pilgrim Passports that were signed and stamped at churches, hotels, and cathedrals along the way.

We walked around the Sacred Valley, to the 4 Franciscan sanctuaries of Poggio Bustone, La Foresta, Fonte Colombo & Greccio. What an amazing experience walking in the footsteps of St Francis & made all the better by Salvatore from Il Mestieri di Viaggiare (www.ilmestiaridiviaggiare.it) who arranged it. We stayed in beautiful hotels & pensione, even the 4 star Hotel Quattro Staggioni for the first & last night's of the walk.
The walk is brilliantly conceived by the Rieti Tourism Board (www.apt.rieti.it) & Salvatore makes it all the more enjoyable with his careful touches of hospitality & charm. We didn't speak good Italian so it also helped greatly that Salvatore spoke excellent English!

La Foresta was the smallest and quietest. Poggio Bustane was almost missed by a wrong turn but worth backing down a long blocked one way street we entered incorrectly. We also reviewed Greccio and Fonte Columbo separately. We made all visits by car as it was too far too walk for an old couple.
