Strolling along via Roma, the city’s main street full of beautiful shops...

Strolling along via Roma, the city’s main street full of beautiful shops and historic palazzos, it is hard to imagine that below the street level there is an extraordinary world waiting to be discovered , consisting of the sturdy arches of the Roman viaduct. This work, built in the third century B.C., was created to bring the street up to a level high enough to avoid flooding and Via Salaria becoming a swamp. This was the ancient salt route entering town and leading to the forum in todays piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The structure consists of grandiose roman vaults, incorporated into a few noble residences, reminiscent of the city of Rieti’s past. Guided tours are often organized in loco upon request, even for small groups.

Rita Giovanelli is a fabulous tour guide. She conducts tours in English as well as Italian. We were fascinated by the ancient Roman walls which still exist. A wonderful morning well spent in the company of an expert in the field. A must for anyone visiting the Sabina region.

We Emailed to ask about a tour (rietidascoprire@vodafone.it) and received a reply and tour-times for our party of six immediately. The guide herself was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and the underground rooms and corridors are beautifully presented. Kids and grown ups loved it (and it was wonderfully cool on a hot July day). We especially enjoyed the combination of ancient... More

Our agriturismo recommended this. You meet the guide by the ponte Romano at 11. If there's no one there there's a telephone number on the notice board by the bridge (the bridge is actually modern- you can see the old one in the water). They take you to explore under the city- you see under a Roman bridge and various... More

It was a great tour, very interesting to see the underground ruins slow Rieti. The tour guide was ver knowledgeable and even collected us from our hotel lobby. Take a jacket as it is quite cool underground, which was a nice relief from the summer heat!

We have been wanting to do this visit ever since we came to live in Sabina a while ago, and we have not been disappointed. It's the best thing to do, to get to know Rieti and its past. Moreover, it's original, unusual, enchanting and very well documented. Our guide, Alessia, spoke with passion and had an answer to very... More
