About
Framed by colorful houses built into the surrounding cliffs, Spiaggia Grande is the main beach of Positano. Rent a sunbed and go for a dip in the refreshing clear turquoise waters. Then, hop on a boat tour or make your way through the town up to Via Cristoforo Colombo Overlook—both offer brilliant views of the Amalfi Coast from different perspectives. If you're looking to escape the crowds, try Fornillo Beach, a 10-minute walk away. Regardless, get in early to nab yourself a good spot for the day, and bring footwear for the small stones that make up the beaches. – Tripadvisor

Positano is a beautiful place! The contrast between the hills and the sea is impressive. The sand is very different from ours here in Brazil. It's dark and thick. The sea is clear, but when we were there the water was very cold. Worth the visit, beautiful photos and unique experience. As a place to stay, I think Italy offers better options.

    A classic
The view of the village from the sea is beautiful. With a large group we managed to find a spot in the afternoon. We just put down our towel and took a no sunbed. Because of the boiling hot sand and pebbles, entering the sea without water shoes is painful. There are more relaxed beaches in the region, such as on Procida.

Positano is nice, but the beaches bite.
It’s an awesome place to visit as Positano is a idillic and beautiful village, but the beaches are actually pretty poor, by global standards. These beaches are rocky and black, vs soft and sandy. It will cost a handful of Euros to rent beach chairs and an umbrella, but that typical in Italy. That said, it’s Positano so go to eat drink and enjoy! VictorB

Although Spiaggia Grande is the main beach of Positano, it is not anyone's idea of a beach paradise, with its greyish sand and extortionate prices to rent a sunbed and umbrella. Despite that, this mere 400 metres stretch of beach will still leave you spellbound because of its enchanting surroundings. Standing at the centre of the beach, you're surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors - from the pastel pink, yellow and white hues of the houses stacked on the cliffside, the colorful majolica-tiled dome of Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the greenish brown of the imposing Lattari Mountains and of course the turquoise sea. With such breathtaking vista, no wonder they say that Positano is a stunning work of pure Italian art. Pure magic!

We were warned by various locals in Pompei that the beach here was absolutely beautiful for taking pictures but it is best to look and move on. Thank God we heeded their advice. Access to the beach area requires navigating a steep grade through the town area to the beach. It was a hump getting back up to the parking area. Expect at least a 25 minute walk from the public parking to the beach.

There is no denying that the beach views set against a cliff side, ancient town are breathtaking, but the reality is that this is a very small beach and the objective here is to make you pay for the beauty. Even under Covid protocols in July of 2021 the beach was crowded. There was 5 of us and the thought of paying a lot of euros for a crowded bit or sandy real estate was not appealing.

We acted upon the tips provided to us by the locals and took some amazing pictures here then moved on to Tropea where we had a much more relaxed beach experience and almost the same type of viewing pleasure. If you stop here, be prepared for some high priced food and parking. Positano is surely a gem of a place but expect to pay for the pleasure.

You cannot visit the Amalfi coast and not visit this beach. The views of Positano are immaculate and the water was warm (end of august). It’s 30 euro per sun bed which is pretty expensive but honestly it was so worth it. They had multiple pedal boats floating close-ish to the shore which made it an easy spot for some dives and flips. We also ate at the restaurant so we gained wifi access that way but otherwise I am not sure if you can get wifi here.

This dark pebble beach is near the port. The view of Positano behind it is lovely. The beach itself though is not pleasant. Most of it is occupied by sun beds which cost 40-50 euros per person and are too close to each other. The public part of the beach was full of cigarette butts and was very overcrowded.

I have a mixed view on this. The views from the sea back into the cliff are gorgeous (along with the sea itself), but it’s absolutely absurd that around 80-85% of the beach if not more is taken up by empty beach clubs charging crazy amounts for a sunbed and the tiny space which is free leaves everyone packed and cramped in like sardines.

I think it’s definitely going to put people off going which is a shame because it’s beautiful. But what’s the use if you can’t enjoy the sea or beach freely (or have to pay through the nose to enjoy it).

The main beach in Positano. It is pretty much divided in 4 areas - paid beach club, only residents and 2 public areas that anyone can access.

The public areas are located on the extremes ends of the beach, residents and beach club centre.

In the public area you don't need to pay anything and any corner will do. As we knew we would be travelling around the Italian coast, we brought beach towels with us and our Airbnb provided a beach umbrella (small but enough to us to hide from the 38oC summer day).

If you plan to travel around the coast, buy a beach umbrella at any store (about $12 Euros). As the paid beach club charge around 15 Euros a day each beach chair with umbrella.

Spiaggia Grande is not sand, but rocks and during hot days the hot rocks will burn your feet. So wear flip-flops. Everyone walked to the water in flip-flops then left it near the water.

An amazing beach to see in Positano when we got off our ferry boat.
The gorgeous hillside with the houses built right on the cliffs!!
This is the main beach in Positano with it's clear, turquoise water.
I was told it is expensive to rent any of the beach chairs or loungers on the beach.
We were just here for a short time, so we did not get in the water or lay on the beach. Definitely a place to people watch though!!
My husband & I LOVE Italy and this was definitely a place to see but you must see it by boat so you can see how majestic those mountains are!!

We had time only for a quick swim, so we went to a free zone for just an hour. It was at the beginning of July and still after pandemic so the beach was not crowded at all. The temperature was about 28C on that day and the water was just so perfect! Also, super clean and clear! We swam around 4 PM and after all day it was still clean (on the sand beaches you may notice some seaweed at some point or water may become not so clear after people swimming in it all day and raising the sand from the bottom of the sea). The view is just spectacular and probably one of the best I’ve ever seen from the beach. All swimmers were very respectful and most of them on a young side. The only downside was the super hot stones! So hot, that you can feel them too much even through the towel. If you are coming for longer, I’d definitely suggest to take an umbrella or go to a paid area and get a bed and everything. It was not so painful to walk on the beach barefoot but we used slippers to walk towards water and left them there until done. If you have special shoes, make sure you take them.

Beautiful postanio.
Fabulous beach expensive took two sunbeds and umbrella cost us 70 euro. We were expecting it as it is August. Felt it is worth it as this beach gives you the perfect view of the town. Also you can leave and come back anytime during the day. Beach was pebble so we're beach shoes.water pure clean natural beauty.

Rude staff. We paid (A LOT) for our seats and could not sit there due to high waves. We spent 20 minutes trying to convince them to let us sit somewhere else or give us a refund. We were sat in a lame spot and were not offered any refund, nor did we get any offer to cover our lunch or a round of drinks. To add to the misery the place is packed with "bros" with zero class. Skip it.
