Worth the uphill walk uphill
Aug 2021
The quiet setting and amazing vistas on the town and sea make this visit somewhat magical. Walk by the small church square on your way back to the harbor and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.

Historic Castle
Nov 2018
This castle is well worth a visit and sits in a commanding position over the quaint village of Portovenere. A bit of a hike but views are worth it.

Sleeping inside castle walls
Sep 2019 • Couples
I felt like a princess. Rented a B&B inside the walls of this ancient castle. The terraced castle behind us, the beautiful harbor in front of us. Couldn't find a more romantic spot. If you are visiting the Cinque Terre, Porto Venere is definitely the place to stay.

Well Worth the Climb ... and the Admission Price
Aug 2019
The ruins of this castle sit — loom really, but not in a scary way — above the little town of Portovenere and provide wonderful views and a fun diversion. Be aware that the path up to the castle starts immediately inside the city gate (the one that starts just outside the gate stays outside the town’s walls and leads up into the hills behind the castle). There’s a small admission price to go all the way up into the actual castle and its battlements but no services like water (bring some of your own on a hot day!) or a bathroom. Give yourself permission to explore the rooms and go up and down stairs; there’s not much signage and even less in English but just poking in and out and around is lots of fun and the views are spectacular. Take time to go down to the old church out at the base of the hill by going out of the castle and taking the path to the right.

Nice Castle
Jul 2019 • Couples
It was quite interesting to have a castle built here. The view from the top of the castle was great and worth to spend EU$5 to enter the castle as well.

Save Your Energy
May 2019 • Couples
The walls of this castle are perched high above the town and dominate the landscape. The castle is not particularly interesting so save your energy for your tour of Cinque Terra.

More interesting from afar
May 2019 • Couples
This castle looks more interesting from afar especially from the breakwater jutting out from the harbor. Avoid the trail starting near the guard tower at Piazza Bastreri which goes along the north side of the castle wall to the top. The view at the top is no better than what you can see at the south side of the caste near San Lorenzo Church but getting to the south side is a whole lot easier compared with the trail going to the north side which is quite steep and slippery in some places. Furthermore, once you reach the top from the north side trail, there is no way to get inside the castle.

the views are great up there but there is nothing worth paying to see. One toilet that was not clean.

Impressive historical building
Apr 2019 • Family
Impressive by the location where it has been built, but lack of historical indications along the visit. More a walk place and view spot rather than a museum where you will learn something. But for 5 euros per adult, one cannot claim a lot more...

Great place to see in a gorgeous little village.Situated in one of the nicest places in Italy.
