It was good to be able to sit in a cool place on a comfortable pouffe and read the English fact sheet loaned from the ticket desk (other languages available) before walking through the 2 (!) rooms of Etruscan, Roman, and Greek artefacts from 8th century B.C. to 5th century A.D. The displays consist of little else than amphorae (wine jars) and bowls. I would have liked some more recent articles, e.g. to do with mineral mining, seafaring, political struggles, etc. And it would have been nice to have the exhibits labelled in more languages than Italian.

The museum is not big, but the collection is selected wisely and also well exhibited. We spent there about 1,5 hour. What suprises me a little is that the part of the collection (especially the mosaics outdoors exhibition) is in very poor condition. Not preserved, not conserved, partially covered with water... Looks like it was forgotten by the museum staff and the overall maintainance is just poor. This seems to be a common problem on Elba.

Easy access, good value entry tickets as they can be bought as part of three museums. Audio guides available.

The museum is on two levels showing findings from mainly underwater excarcations in the 60s. The museum is old fashioned and quite unambitious. All tables are in Italian only. Most of the exhibits are amphoros. I love museums but this one could easily be forgotten.

We visited the tower to get some great photos of the port. Clearly the builders put the tower exactly where it needed to be for defense or photos.. very kind of them. The top of the tower is easily reached with good stairs and handrails. The view is great.

I know we English are lazy when it comes to languages, but you would expect tourist attractions to either have English speaking guides/member(s) of staff or at least English transcriptions of information on exhibits and antiques. Not so here. This could have been an interesting museum but unfortunately we couldn't gain any knowledge throughout the site. and it's not just English tourists that would be frustrated - there were no alternative languages at all.
if the language issue was corrected i would recommend a visit.

Didn't have time to go inside Museum. It is in a good location at the harbour. After going to Fort Falcone first, we literally ran out of time.

Will definitely return to Portoferrario.

Wandering around outside in the grounds was lovely. There are some nice places to sit by the water and admire the surroundings.
