How wonderful to find a traditional market square which was a bustling, thriving centre selling fresh fruit and vegetables. No transit vans or noisy generators here ... just simple covered market stalls selling high quality local produce and attracting good custom. Turn the clock back and this would be a scene from yesteryear! The smell, sound and local community engaging together was a delight, and exploring Pistoia was to reveal some stunning architecture and wonderful hidden surprises. Lots to see here and not as busy as many of the popular tourist destination in Tuscany.

The square is the heart of the city, with many bars and restaurants around it. It is also the location of the open-air market with fruits and vegetable stalls and twice a week it hosts the huge central market. But it is colorful and lively during the whole day, either for a morning coffee, nice lunch or evening glass of vine, this is the place to be!

We traveled here by taxi and walked all around. Most striking were the numerous vegetable and fruit markets there were also. many butcher shops and a great fish cart. All you could ever want in one place. All fresh fruit of which we bought. Peaches and plumbs back to our hotel

Lovely square and town in general, huge market on Wednesday and Saturday that takes over the whole town. Well worth a look, selling whole range of goods.

The place to be seen in to drink in and to eat in - the BIZ centre of Pistoia. Busy most nights but absolutely packed on Fridays and Saturdays - late late late

Consiglio ai naviganti! La sala riporto lonely planet...Make friends and drink spritz in Piazza della Sala

You might not be in the market for bull’s heart tomatoes or bags of chestnuts, but like every shopping-trolley toting nonna (grandmother) you’ll be magnetically drawn to Piazza della Sala. 'La Sala' is one of the oldest squares in Pistoia and there has been a market here since the 11th century. It sells everything from fish to fruit, vegetables to flowers, all of which are piled high on benches beneath shady canopies. It’s like an open-air food court and a community hub rolled into one.

Each day follows the same rhythm. In the morning, Pistoiese housewives are out in force doing the daily shop. At lunchtime the shutters of surrounding shops clatter open so workers can grab superior snacks at delis like I Salaioli. There’s a sleepy slump in the middle of the day before things crank up again at aperitivo hour, when the crowd at wine bars like Voronoi (ristocaffetteriavoronoi.it) grows younger and hipper. By the time night falls, the square is an intimate drawing room, back-lit to reveal its best features to romancing couples who melt away into adjacent alleys for dinner at intimate trattorie such as La BotteGaia.

Of cause we don't know if there are cosier squares in Tuscany, by this one is extremely great. Lively both day and night with food market all day and restaurant, bars and lots of life in the evenings. Don't miss it, if you visit Pistoia.

We strolled a morning through Pistoia and ended here on a terrace in the sun for coffee. Sat here with our coffee and a book and enjoyed everything.

MY GF and I were passing through Pistoia on our tour of Tuscany and so we asked around what was the best thing to do having only one night in the city. Everybody told us this piazza is where everything happened, so we went. So, on the one side, the concept is cute, because it's almost like an open ceiling food court (with alcohol, obviously) - on the other side though, I swear the entire city was in that piazza that night - it got really crowded really fast.
