I have been planning for this trip for about a month and was very looking forward to this experience. When we arrived there at about 9am, they told us that the bus to the zoo will come at around 12, which is very late and it was very hot to wait in the sun under a bus shelter. What happens? the bus did not arrive so we wait for another hour as the next bus had to come at around 1.15pm and it did not arrive either. I will never recommend this to my freinds as it was a bad experience for me

We visited the zoo on a sunny afternoon in October with our 3year old.
The entrance fee is reasonable and there was enough parking close to the entrance.
There are many animals, from horses to elephants. Some of them, including the giraffe, you can feed (0.20€/per portion). There is a nice playground where you can sit and have a picnic. Well worth the money, we had a great afternoon.
We had lunch in the restaurant, very childfriendly and fairly priced. Would recommend.

We had a few transport hiccups getting to this zoo from Florence but it was worth it once we got there. The first problem was after arriving at Pistoia Train Station from Florence where we were confronted with a busy bus terminal outside with no clear signs of which line number to take.
After eventually finding a bus company office and buying tickets (across from the station) we were told to catch either a number 29 or 59 bus. Many of the buses had no number, rather destinations so we had to ask disinterested bus drivers, "Andiamo Zoologico?" After 1.5 hours of this we gave up and hopped in a taxi, which is what we advise - TAKE A TAXI TO THE ZOO FROM THE STATION! It only takes 10 minutes and 11 euros.
Giardino Zoologico di Pistoia is a small zoo that seems a little underfunded. Several of the exhibits, like bears, wolves, parrots and gibbons were simply not there and there was no explanation given.
The enclosures for the elephants, rhinoceros and hippos seemed too small and made us feel sad for them. On the plus side we were able to see the tiger, lions and panthers up very close so this was thrilling. Also it is possible to feed the baby goats which was great fun for our daughter.
There is a good cafe here with reasonable prices too so you can take a break to refresh yourselves.

It was one of the worse zoos I have ever been to. The cages were tiny and smelly.it was a long way from Florence and definitely not worth the trip.i read the reviews before going and couldn't believe I was in the same place I read the reviews from.

Dear Marie J, we're sorry you find the zoo so bad. The distance from Florence is forty minutes by car and an hour by train more or less. We've a lot of visitors that comes also from longer distances. Your review is only based on impressions; to improve the quality of the garden (according to your review...) we would appreciate receiving more detailed and more objective and unambiguous aspects. Thank you to visit the GZP.

Lovely walk in the zoo that is stroller friendly. We went on a Monday ....few people, free parking. There are some areas under construction for the Penguins but overall great outing especially the Tibetan panda area and central playground. Zoo keepers should take more care of maintenance as trash cans were rather full probably a result of more flow over the weekend.

We brought in this wonderful garden our 2 years old child...it enjoyed a lot the journey.
The possibility to be so close to so terrific animals is amazing.
He had the possibility to touch the Giraffe and the Elephant...he looked so close to the Bear (without Masha :-) ) and had the great opportunity to admire tigers and lions behind a glass. Hippoes and crocodriles have been his favourite's. Unfortunately no chance to see the wolf! A great experience if you are in Tuscany with childrens. Really suggested! (we paid 15€ for adults...no fees for younger than 3 years; free parks; free drinkable water fountains; clean toilets)

Arrived in Pistoia by train to visit zoo today. Zoo website tells you to take number 59 bus but beware that there are only a few buses a day wihin zoo opening hours! We were restricted to 3 hours there. Bus leaves from outside train station at 8am 12.05, 13.15 and returns 13 ish 15.17 then next one after 19.00!! Zoo itself very tidy and well kept. Info displays well written so everyone could understand. Lots of shade for a hot day or a rainy one like we had.
Worth a visit if you are in the area with kids. Not cutting edge of zoos so some enclosures small by standards you'd expect these days but there is evidence of animal rescue and conservation so not just a money making venture. Animals seemed happy.

it took us ages to find this zoo because it had no signage and when we got their the admisssion was medium priced. there is a nice restaurant with nice food such as pasta's, salad's, meat's and lots more. the first part of the zoo is nice with new, large, clean, cages, their is brown bears, wolves, lynxes, birds, leopards, deer and lots more. the middle part of the zoo smells as their is a petting-farm with goats, sheep, rabbits then we saw camels, polar bears in a horrible cage, more birds, a very nice lion and tiger cage with lots of educational facts, flamingoes and ducks and also a poor sealion cage. the next part is the african themed the cages are tiny, old and dirty this includes: giraffe's, hippo's, rhino's, elephant's, ostriche's, merrkats and more. then their is lots of birds, a small smelly kangaroo and emu cage, a nice reptile house and crocodiles plus a few more cages. at the end their is a nice gift shop. overall it really needs to improve some of its cages as they are tiny, smelly, old and dirty but there is a few nice cages.

A train from Florence to Pistioa and then we took a bus to the zoo. This place is a heaven on earth were you can see a lot of animals. Unlike other zoos i have visited, these animals have a lot of space to roam around. Its an ideal place to take the children with you as there is space to play.
The only draw back is that the buses does not pass frequently to Pistia and if you miss the bus there is about 1 hour walk.
Its a pity that this place is not advertised any where.

I highly reccomend the Zoo. First of all I was impressed by the number of families with little kids. It was an educating visit with a lot of fun within it for the kids. The zoo itself was very well oragnized. It was clear that they take good care of the animals. There is a bar for having a coffee and rest some minutes. There is also a restaurant but I didn't try it. It's really worth your time.
