The oldest church in the city, standing on a cliff at the western edge of Orvieto. The Romanesque stone facade still retains the appearance of the time of its construction. Although the interior has peeled off considerably, the beautiful frescoes remain, and it is easy to imagine that this church has been loved since ancient times.

We were encouraged by hotel staff to visit this end of town for it's vista and this medieval church, one the oldest in Umbria. The frescoes and entire church are a walk through history. A must see and as another review said a stark contrast to the Duomo.

wow, we were so humbled by this visit. The frescos are stunning and the quiet in there is humbling. We sat for 30 minutes just enjoying the simplicity of the space and yet the rich sincere beautiful frescos.

After touring the Duomo in Orvieto, it was quite a contrast to visit this church, the oldest in the city (11th century). We walked in to the aroma of incense as a small gathering, maybe a dozen people at most, were praying and singing. It felt so much more sacred and simple and unadorned compared to the Duomo. And a lot of the frescoes are still vibrant. I loved that the front door was “locked” with a wooden pole fixed across the entryway.

The church was built around 1,000 AD. Beautiful frescoes have been preserved. Well worth visiting while in Orvieto.

This is another small church in Orvieto that contains beautiful stained glass and artistic beauty. The altar and marble arches are incredible.

We came across this church during a stroll around Orvieto in August. The church dates from the 1100s and you sense the true modest religiosity of the building from the moment you enter. The frescoes are a marvel.

We were just wandering the city streets one afternoon and came across San Giovenale church. It was different than most of the churches we visited in Orvieto. I really liked the paintings on the wall and columns. A different architecture on the inside. The outside was extremely plain. In fact you would walk right by it not knowing it was a church except for a very small metal cross on the top.

A relatively small, unassuming neighborhood type church that's a bit out of the way. However, it is anything but unassuming. The interior is beautiful. The many frescoes and other art make it truly a wonderful experience. The location, perched on the west wall with views of Tuscany is inspiring. Take care upon entering. It is a neighborhood church with frequent evening services.

Beautiful location, seems like the last place on earth because it's at the tip of the city. Stunning view of the valley from here. This ancient church with really great paintings inside is perfect. Not to miss.
