We booked a wine tasting at Avignonesi since we had tasted this wine before and enjoyed it. We tasted 4 wines (20 €) among which an interesting rosé and two red wines. Very friendly athmosphere. It is worth it if you enjoy wines.

Our culinary group arrived at Avignonesi and was warmly greeted by the manager and our tour guide, Oscar. The history and mission of the winery was explained to us! Everyone was impressed by their commitment to the environment, sustainability, concern for their workers, and of course the satisfaction of the consumer. Then Oscar took us on a complete tour of the facilities, including the wine cellars, production facilities, kitchen where fresh duck was roasting on a one of a kind spit, and so much more! Following this wonderfully informative tour by Oscar, who completely answered all of our questions we sat down for what arguably was the most enjoyable lunch of our two weeks in Tuscany! Chef Luca Biancucci's commitment to seasonal organic and locally sourced ingredients is not unusual in Tuscany but the perfect portioning, elegant presentations, splendid cuisine paired with Avignonesi's finest wines was just "out of this world" as Constant Companion wrote in her journal! Our menu included: Maltagliati pasta handmade in house from their own spelt flour accompanied by wlld boar ragu cooked in white wine and black olives. This was paired with tastings of Avignonesi's Marzocco Chardonnay Toscana IGT and La Tonda Sangiovese Toscana IGT. The secondo was the spit roasted duck seasoned with wild fennel, pan seared roasted potatoes and salad from their own garden accompanied by Avignonesi's 50 & 50 Toscana IGT. The dolce was a trio of bigne(hazelnut, pistachio, and lemongrass) along with Occhio di Pernice Vin Santo di Montelpulciano DOC. Needless to say, this was heavenly and afterward many of us visited their shop to send home some of the above wines which are not available in the states!…

Really great! We’ve done this twice with different small groups of our friends. The grounds are beautiful and the English tours are very informative and interesting. We started in the morning with a cooking class. In this hands-on class, we made Tiramisu, Pici Pasta, and a roasted chicken dish that was started by being wrapped in Saran Wrap. All were delicious. Lunch was fabulous and being able to taste the wines we just learned about was well done. They have a nice gift shop with a good selection of wines. They ship, so of course we bought the Vin Santo! A must do when near Montepulciano!…

I am very glad that we took the time to visit Avignonesi, but the wines did not live up to the hype for me. If you are in Tuscany for wines, by all means go taste the 50&50 you have heard about! But go home with something else. Vin Santo is not an everyday option in the US so maybe take some tiny bottles in a nice wooden box! For us, the worst part of the visit was trying to check out. Through absolutely no fault of the Avignonesi staff, there was an obnoxious tour guide who wanted their undivided attention on and on and on. I felt bad for the staff, but our scheduled was botched for the next vineyard.…
