My husband and I visited a few weeks ago while staying in Montepulciano. The woman hosting the tastings was extremely condescending. We tasted one wine (low price point), said it wasn't what we were hoping for. She rather grudgingly poured us another tasting, which we liked, and proceeded to tell us it was "oceans away" from the previous wine, essentially implying we couldn't afford it. She then turned her back on us. We purchased the bottle anyway (and no, it wasn't astronomically expensive at all, 24 euros!). We stayed in town for a week and sent four cases of wine home -- but not one from Cantucci.

These wine cellars are small but are a fascinating place to spend some time. You get to see barrel after barrel of wine. There's an opportunity to sample some of the cellar's wine at the end. Its free but you are encouraged to buy a bottle or more.

Contucci is a historic winery in the heart of the Piazza Grande a Montepulciano. Valentina and Leda were our awesome and gracious wine tasting hostesses. We had so much fun with them, we came back several times that week we stayed in Montepulciano. I like the Contucci Palazzo Nobile and I already received my shipment back in the U.S. But there are also multiple other good wines to try here. They were out of the Nobile Riserva when we visited in mid-October.

This review is actually from 2018 but better late than never. :) I saw this cellar as a recommendation from Rick Steves. I did not take the wine testing but went around the cellar and the shop. Bought 3 bottles of red wine back to Germany and it was amazing! I missed this wine and wish that I could buy this online directly from Contucci. Hopefully in the future that I make a return trip to Montepulciano. I migth buy a case!

Located on the Piazza Grande, my wife and I chose the Cantine Contucci for our first meal in Montepulciano. We decided to split a typical Tuscan anti pasta of cured meats and cheeses and focus on the wines. Our host was also one of the Cantine’s hosts for their wine tastings offered during the days. He thoroughly explained the nuances of their different offerings and recommended a couple of wines to have with our charcuterie dinner. We tasted their best Vino Nobile Riserva, a mid-grade Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and an earthy Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Mulinvecchio. All were outstanding. This was a perfect way to be introduced to one region’s Tuscan wines. We should have gone back during the day for a formal wine tasting. Highly recommend.

We went here because of the recommendation in Rick Steves book. We usually feel his advice is correct except for here. We met the owner, Adamo, as he happened to stop in while we were there. I felt it was very touristy. Perhaps the owner was just having a bad day that day as we all have experienced on occasion. I would not return.

Although we liked the wine, a testing was free, and we liked visiting the barrels of wine in the basement, we felt the wines were overpriced.

We got great bottles of wine in the local supermarket – COOP - for a fraction of the price.

Thank You for Your review. We are pleased that You enjoyed our wine. Adamo isn't the owner, but our wine maker for over 50 years. The prices can't be compared to those in the supermarket because they are two completely different realities, and they are in line with the prices of other wineries. However if You come back we wait You.

This was a major letdown. The Rick Steves guidebook and all of our friends that have toured this place give it the highest rating. However, we discovered they do not cater well to couples passing through. The woman who gave us a wine tasting hurried us through the wines and did not bother to give us much background on what we were tasting. She was curt and frowned a lot, and was clearly hoping a tour group could be brought in off the street.

We toured the cellars on our own, which was nice until we made it to the second cellar. As we entered there was a tour group a long way in front of us. A short blonde woman physically blocked my wife and stuck a hand right in her face saying "privato." It was so offensive we were shocked. I asked if we could come back later, and she said in broken English we could come back in 15 minutes unless they were not done. No smile, no apologies, and nothing but frowns and aggression.

This place is off my list. I am so disappointed, because the wine was fantastic and this had the potential to be a really exciting experience. If you are not in a tour group, I recommend you DO NOT waste your time or money here. I wish the employees were more friendly to non-groups.

Travellers to Montepulciano will often be on the lookout for a memorable place to taste the famous Vino Nobile. Do your self a favor and visit Adamo at the Contucci Cantina, located on the main square.

The first thing you will notice, that this wine store/tasting room is located in a 13th century palace. There you can explore the barrel rooms and wine cellars and their small bottling room. Then, meander over to the tasting room and your host, Adamo. Though he speaks little English, Adamo easily communicates the qualities and nuiances of the 7 or 8 wines that he is always pouring. The wines are pretty good, and be sure to try their olive oil as well. However, be sure to visit with Adamo, take a picture and let him tell you about his lifes passion, wine. He is a lot of fun.
