Etna Excursions from Catania

192 reviews
Large bus tours usually take visitors to the Etna visitor center and easily accessible craters, but this tour offers a small, personalized exploration of other parts of the mountain. Travel in a 4WD vehicle or minivan to areas inaccessible by larger transport, and visit the Valle del Bove, a canyon-like depression with an interesting landscape, and the Silvestri Craters. The tour also includes exploration of a lava cave.

We visited this small island while on a Globus tour. The short ferry ride from the nearby salt flats left us off to enjoy and explore this archaeological site. The beautiful island was settled by early Carthaginians. The excellent Museo Whitaker holds a wealth of artifacts beautifully displayed! As part of the tour we also enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch. We sat on ancient stones around a stone table under the trees and sampled a variety of Sicilian specialties. A lovely afternoon!

Interesting museum on a very pretty island. We were only there for an hour. Arrived by boat from Marsala, surrounded by salt flats. Well worth a visit to learn about the English couple who lived there 150 years ago and who started the museum.

The island of Mozia is a bit off the tourist map but it was very interesting. The boat ride was pleasant and the museum was fascinating although the ruins were impressive. We even met archeologists from the University of Rome who gave us the story of what they were excavating. Lunch was a buffet and was great.

The island of Motzia is a lovely trip, nice boat-ride and a walk among Phoenician ruins. The museum itself has amazing ancient artifacts going back thousands of years. In particular, the recovered Greek statue of the "youth", aka the charioteer, is truly magnificent. I'm no expert in Greek art, but this statue is said to be unique for its Carthaginian aspect, the flowing gown. Walk around the statue and you'll see a beautiful muscular body, under the robes. It apparently has travelled to many venues, Venezia and the Getty in LA among them, but apparently will now stay in the Whitaker. A real treat, as is the whole aspect of the trip to Motzia as well as the museum.

Frankly I don't know if tourist buses unload their docile clients here as we saw only individual couples and families on the boat and then inside the rambling museum, but it is definitely an interesting piece of Sicilian history. Another example of the English fascination with the island, and a contribution to the preservation of its heritage.
