Maratea is a quaint hill-side village about 2.5 hours south of Naples and sits in spectacular mountains by the sea. Built in 1965 the statue (made of white granite) of Jesus Christ sits on top of one of the highest cliffs or mountains overlooking the sea on what is called St Bagio. The statue is the third tallest in Europe at 21.20 meters and from finger tip to finger tip is 19 meters. Both Maratea and the statue are worthy of a visit. You can walk from the town but the best way is to catch a taxi and have him wait as it was not costly.

You can see this for miles away as the statue overlooks the area on a high hill. We drove up to the parking lot and walked the half a kilometer up from there. There was some but limited parking at top. Recommend walking from the lot as we passed thru the former village on the side of the hill opposite the water. It was breath taking up there. Well worth the 5 or 6 eur to park and walk. Went to church at top

I was in Rio earlier this year, so when my friends said there was a Christ the Redeemer on a mountain in Italy, I said let's go for it. The ride up was exciting. Small road, steppingstones mountain, hairpin turns. When you reach the summit, there is a parking lot and you are charge 3 euros to take a very clean, prompt and efficient bus to the top of the hill. I have read some contributors griping about the cost. I did not think twice as that money was probably contributing to keeping the place clean and tidy. The walk up to the statue is impressive as the head and body begin to be seen. The views are spectacular. You can walk up to the base of the statue for a picture. I preferred to look out at the view and of course the statue against the sky. We bought drinks and sat outside a cafe terrace. Very peaceful. There was a coach waiting to take us down to the car where we paid a minimal fee for the parking lot. On our way down, we stopped in the town of Maratea. It was very quaint with a variety of tourist stores along with craft and jewelry stores. We had lunch in the square. It made for a great day trip.

Maratea is a beautiful town, however to enjoy the best view you have to visit the Cristo Redentore Statue. The statue in fact overlooks the all bay. You can go up the hill by car. You will find a parking space close to the top. Special shuttles will then take you below the statue. The shuttle service runs also during late evening. The view from there is really stunning

The statue stands atop the entire valley and is most impressive, especially when it is lit up at night.

Phenomenal views from the top and photo opps with the statue are too good to miss. There are a few cafes at the top which we didn't bother stopping at but its nice to know there was the option. The church was closed when we visited but we would have liked to go inside.

Highly recommend doing the walk up. The views are stunning the entire way. We left at 8 AM before it was too hot and had the place to ourselves.

One of those amazing sights you will never forget. And seeing it lit up at night from the town of Maratea (which sits below the statue on the mountain) is just incredible.

The statue is very high, it is over 20 metres in height and is installed at the edge of the hill It can be seen from almost every part of the Basilicata coast. By night its white body is illuminated and the sight is just fantastic.
