This church, originally consecrated to the Madonna delle Nevi, is located in Marina Corta. It was built in the mid-16th century.

After the pirate Barbarossa docked here and sacked the city, he took refuge in that church. It was destroyed and was rebuilt as this church dedication to the souls in purgatory in honor of the victims of the pirate sack.

A visit costs 1 € and takes about 10 minutes.

Upon entering this little old restored 13th century church at Corto Marina I was amazed to see the extensive dioramas extending the length of the building with little figures, buildings and activities portraying aspects of the lives of the fisher-folk on this historic island of Lipari. I took a couple of friends there the next day however the church was closed so it may be worth checking out just when it does open. It's well worth spending a little time there. The name of the church means that it was dedicated to 'souls in purgatory'. The Catholic church believed that immediately after death people were in Purgatory and those destined for heaven underwent purification in order to enter heaven.

One goes inside expecting to see a church's interior. instead one get a reconstruction of what life was in the "good old days"

1 euro admission. An interesting mock miniature town with figurines and with live fishes in the canal.

Open by appointment only....we found it via the lovely granita restaurant opposite the church....invited us back when one of the principals was available with the key. This large diorama depicts the lovely port area. It is populated with artists renditions of actual towns people. The showing provided us an opportunity to contribute to the fund to restore this small, lovely historic church.

I was really keen to see the diorama built by the fishermen and people of Lipari in the Chiesa delle Anime del Purgatorio in Marina Corta.
Rising early in the morning we went to Marina Corta and were greatly disappointed to find the entire church wrapped in plastic and closed for renovation. Check on this attraction before you visit.

The old church for the fishermen of Lipari at Marina Corto. Full of dioramas of village life with miniature figurines instead of religious iconography.
