It is a square that carves out its own space around the Roman arena resurfaced during archaeological excavations.
This square leads to the pedestrian street that crosses the ancient area full of noble palaces and churches.
In the center is a mosaic with the black she-wolf, symbol of the city. Walking on the she-wolf is an essential good luck charm for tourists.

This is the central square of old town Lecce. The Piazza is pretty big with a tall obelisk in the middle dedicated to town's patron Saint of Oronzo.
The best attraction is certainly the semi excavated amphitheater.
Side streets are full with bars and restaurants.

This Busy piazza contains several points of interest including the Colonna di Sant'Oronzo and the Il Sedile. Next to it you will find the Roman Amphitheater.

It is named for the patron saint of Lecce, Bishop, later Saint, Oronzo.

Just like in Ostuni, Sant’Oronto was honoured giving name to this important square and there is a very high obelisk with his image. On this same square is the Roman Amphitheatre. The square is quite frequented by tourists who sit down to enjoy the tranquility of the place. Very wide, the square houses beautiful buildings!

There is a bit of everything in Lecce's most famous square.

I am referring to the architectural styles, starting from the Roman Amphitheater built by Octavian Augustus in the 1st century AD. up to the buildings in the rationalist/return to order style of the twenty years.

Indeed, let's add the Christmas market stalls and the work in progress.

The tourist cannot help but pass by as it is a point of reference.

The heart of the city and certainly the square to start the visit of the historic center of Lecce. It is surrounded by the famous Roman Amphitheatre, many commercial activities and offices, while at the center of the same is the Column of Sant'Oronzo. To Visit

This lovely Piazza in the center of old town is where you will find the Roman Amphitheater, the palazzio di Seggio, and the column and statue of St Oronzo, the town's patron saint. It is worth a visit.

Whilst this isn't the square with the duomo, it somehow feels like the centre of the old town with lots going on. Tourist information is situated by the central ruins.

There is a tall column with a statue of the protecting Saint Oronzo on top. In 1656, when the plague was killing over a million people in southern Italy, Otranto and Lecce were miraculously spared. In 1658 Bishop Oronzo officially replaced Saint Irene as Lecce’s patron saint. The column in the piazza was with its original Oronzo statue was built in 1685. After damage, a new figure of Saint Oronzo was carved in Venice and placed on top the column in 1739. The wooden statue is covered in copper. The square is a hub of tourists, shops and restaurants. The newly discovered (1901) ancient Roman Ampitheatre is just off the south side of Piazza Sant'Oronzo. Parking for this entire little city is a pain in the buttocks! We parked outside the city proper at a supermarket and walked. Google parking lots before you go to Lecce.

During the day this Piazza hums along very nicely but at night it is positively bursting with vibrancy. The passeggiata in Lecce is like no other, (Sulmona is close), even on cool nights, the weather didn't discourage folk. It seems like all of Lecce comes out in the evening to gather in Piazza Sant'Oronzo.

This is a large beautiful piazza, with some amazing structures as embellishments. Listed below are some of the gems to be found -

Column of Sant'Oronzo - The column along with its twin in Brindisi, both marked the end of Via Appia. It was gifted to Bishop Oronzo, for saving/ending both Lecce and Brindisi from the plague in 1656. The statue of Saint Oronzo was placed on top in 1881. Saint Oronzo is the patron Saint of Lecce.

Anfiteatro - Built between the 1st and 2nd century AD, it was only discovered at the beginning of the 1900's. At a time when Lecce had a population of 4,000, the amphitheatre could accommodate 25,000 spectators. Elliptical in shape, it is more than 100 metres long. Unfortunately a lot of it is buried under the city, but what you can see is impressive. There are good views looking down into it from the piazza.

Sedile/Palazzo del Seggio - built 1592. Was the Town Hall of Lecce until half way through the 19th century. It is now the tourist information centre. Stunning building.

City's Coat of Arms - Mosaic tiles which make up the city's coat of arms. A a she-wolf (“Lupa”) and a holm-oak tree (“Leccio”) crowned by five Towers. This lies just over from the amphitheatre.

Church/Chapel of San Marco - Built in 1543, by the Venetians living in the city at the time. Doesn't appear to be used as a place of worship anymore. Didn't go inside as men were playing cards. This is a really beautiful little church/chapel. Located next to the tourist information centre.

There are plenty of restaurants around the piazza, so you don't go hungry while exploring.

Bikes for hire are in the piazza. Some are for two people and have a canopy over the top, which is ideal for hot days. Lecce is very flat, making it ideal for cycling.

Don't forget to join the locals in their passeggiata.
