Came here today on a day trip from Bari 20€return on train and about 1 hr 45 mins each way. Possibly it being a Monday, mid October or a combination of both, some restaurants and shops were closed, and it wasn't busy at all. Some lovely buildings to see. In the Piazza Duomo you can buy a 9€ ticket to see the Museum of Sacred Art (which didn't excite me) and 5 mJor churches. This Piazza is lovely. Has the bell tower but they wanr 12€ to go up it. The Roman Ampitheatre is also impressive

We travelled up and down around Puglia to all the places by train local buses and taxi plus tuk tuk (three wheeler).Train timetable as good as Swiss timing, connections change over just fantastic. Train journeys . Lecce to Bari, Monopoli, Ostuni, Otranto, Arelrobello, Gallipoli, Locorotondo and Brindisi. So from this list all great service excellent station staff.
Lecce staff excellent and have english speaking staff, self service ticket machines in english, look at different times for cheaper rail prices.

Lecce is full of Baroque-style buildings and cathedrals. You can stop by and admire the expressiveness and eloquence of the Baroque design.
During the late afternoon to the evening, stroll along the street or enjoy a cup of “coffee Leccese” at a bar, immerse yourself into the lively and relaxed atmosphere of Lecce.
It is one of the must-see cities in Puglia.

Lecce is a beautiful city and you cannot go to Puglia without visiting it. There are many things to visit, the city seems small but contains many works of art. In any case, the historic centre can be easily visited on foot. You must see all masterpieces of the Lecce Baroque, as well as the Roman amphitheatre, built with Lecce stone. Stop in one of the trattoria in the historic center and order a typical meal of Puglia.

The historical centre of Lecce is one of the most beautiful old towns in Italy especially if you like baroque architecture as most of the buildings display its characteristics. They are made of the white-yellowish limestone found everywhere around the town. Beside beatuiful baroque churches there are also remains of Roman architecture, especially the amphitheatre.

... and caffè leccese.
The baroque architecture in Lecce’s historic centre is wonderful.
The most impressive way to enter the old town is via one of the historic gates. Porta Napoli or Porta Rudiae on the west, Porta San Biagio on the east.
Entering the old town from the Porta Rudiae takes you directly to the Piazza del Duomo, for the Cattedrale di Lecce with its double facade and five-storey campanile, then onward to the Sant’Oronzo Column, a Roman column topped with a bronze statue of the city’s patron saint and the sunken Roman amphitheater.
Don’t however leave it at that! Take your time to amble through the narrow streets of the old town, crossing from the historic gates that allow you to enter or leave. The great thing is that you can do it all in an afternoon, with time for some aperitivi and dinner, although more time is recommended.
Be sure to stop off for Lecce’s most famous pastry, the pasticciotto, a crumbly pie-type pastry traditionally filled with an egg custard, though sometimes with jam, Nutella (of course) or crema di pistacchio or a mix of these. Take it with a caffè leccese - another Puglia classic. A shot of espresso served over ice and with almond “milk” (it’s actually an almond syrup).
The old town is packed full of good restaurants and busy bars. It is where we go to shop, with some of our favourite boutiques (there is no concept of "high street" here).

The Roman amphitheater is in the center of town. Only partly excavated and restored as it is covered by many more recent buildings. No entry is currently allowed to tourists.
Others are using this location for a general review of Lecce. The medieval town walls still stand. The streets are very walkable as the town is fairly level. Many attractions await the eager explorer. The people are pleasant and welcoming.

Lecce is a great city for lovers of architecture, especially the Baroque. You would need a good tour guide or an excellent guide book to get the most out of the city. At every turn there is something to be seen. The remains of the Roman amphitheatre are well worth seeing - what a remarkable excavation this must have been! Of the various cities and town in Puglia that we visited this would come very high on the list.

The place doesnt have the big size like the Foros in Rome but it is still worthy to visit. Not only because it has history but also being located in a very cool square where you can have a great ice cream or a canolli. Read about the battles that happened there, you will be able to judge by yourself what took place there. Nice experience.

Centro Storico Lecce: Right there in the piazza is the Roman amphitheater. A short walk down a few streets is the church with the Baroque facade and next to it the Jewish museum. Many sights to see al in walking distance. But be prepared, this city is very hot in the summer.

Buona visita

Hi, we are thinking of coming to Puglia this summer, and we were wondering how it compares to Sicily, which we visited last year (staying in Siracusa and Palermo). Is it possible to be based in Lecce or Brindisi, say, and travel around? It look like there are plenty of historical sites, is this right? Lat year we found Sicily quite vegetarian friendly, is this the case for Puglia? Any advice or information would be really helpful, thanks.

You can spend easily a week in Puglia. It is not dissimilar from Sicily, although there is less arabic influence and more greek and norman. Lecce is probably the most charming of the "big" towns but it is far from the sea and the beaches. Lovely little towns are Ostumi, Martinafranca, Otranto, Gallipoli and, not to miss, Matera (not in Puglia but a short drive from Lecce). The food is wonderful, with plenty of vegetarian offering (the national dishes orecchiette con rape".
