Who says an atheist can't appreciate a great church!

The basilica has a very interesting facade which it is worth having a guide explain its significance to you. Within the detail can be found the benefactors name and other historical information.

The way you respond to a church is a very personal matter. To me, many churches are austere, or contain bad art, or are too gloomy, or simply seem to set out to scare. Not this one. The stonework both outside and in is light in tone and the stone-carving, of which there is enough to keep you admiring for... More

The most beautiful baroque church I've ever seen. I had a strange feeling entering the building like touching the history. The historical center in Lecce is relatively small all could be seen just walking from one to another, all are impressive, even the streets in the old town. Very friendly people, many places to sit for a good coffee. Unfortunately... More

This church has magnificent baroque facade, decorated with so many details. Near it is former convent. Definitely must to see in Lecce, before the cathedral.

Everywhere in Lecce there are churches tucked away. You round a corner, and boom! there it is. Even covered with scaffolding, this church is really lovely, soft gold sandstone exterior embellished with lots of pretty things. The baroque in Italy is lovely white or white and gold--not that pink and baby blue stuff with the fat cherubs you see in... More

All the sights around the old city are pretty close together and can be visited albeit briefly in a day. Look out for the amphi theatres.

We were a bit bummed that it was covered in lots of scaffolding, as the amount of detail on the facade is astounding. You could look at it for hours...so unusual and interesting. Not crowded in April. Inside is just as interesting and over the top as well, loved the chandeliers. Another highlight in Lecce, not to be missed.

One of the the strangest church facades that I have seen and the internal roof decoration and frescos are also amazing.

Baroque is not my favorite architectural style but if it were, the Basilica di Santa Croce would be my favorite example of such style. Too bad it was crowded during our visit and its facade was being worked on. Regardless, it is a must to see in Puglia. Take binoculars with you to peer closely at the details. They are... More

A completely baroque confection with a beauty and grace all of its own, this large church is extremely well maintained, and used well by its local congregation. We were fortunate enough to join a Sunday evening service which had the benefit of having all 14 massive chandeliers blazing light on the interior. If you visit only one church in Lecce... More
