This city suffered a very strong earthquake in 2009. They are still under construction (after more than 10 years) so you can still see the work sites all around the square and along the streets near it. The space is large, the fountain is well cared for and often activities are carried out (concerts, market...), but looking around you will feel a strange feeling, as if there was something wrong. Many buildings have been rebuilt with a "fake" Roman style while many other structures are still under restoration. The strength of the inhabitants shines through from the fully operational activities, in the same way shines through the weakness of those who could do more. The place is absolutely to visit.

Unfortunately the Duomo still appeared to be closed because of the extensive damage caused by the earthquake ten years ago but all around the Piazza there was evidence of renovation work going on. Not quite a building site but scaffolding and buttressing everywhere. Only one cafe appeared to be open on the Piazza. Hopefully it will all come back to life once more buildings are repaired.

It must have been a beautifull place before 2009, but at this moment it's a construction place, with many buildings under cinstruction/restauration with scaffolding everywhere.

The earthquake really damage most buildings in the piazza. Lucky they are all under construction. To preserve history is so important and now one can witness progress in a positive way. The buildings are still beautiful, just under construction.

Unfortunately the duomo is still closed, the other church on the piazza has one small room open as a chapel of remembrance for victims of the earthquake and as you scan there is scaffolding everywhere. But there is a certain vibrancy nonetheless - the view of the mountains is beautiful, and there is a store that sells locally-made meats, cheeses and other things near a bar where you can get a drink and a few nibbles to relax. I would not advise others to travel to L'Aquila but if you find yourself this is a good place to sit and relax for a few moments.
