I think this fountain with 99 outlets has been restored since the 2009 earthquake and all the spouts were operating on the Sunday when we visited. I've read that it dates from the foundation of L'Aquia as a "new town" in the early middle ages.

This is a gem of travertine & marble of the 1200s. This large square piazza has the unique 99 "cannelli" (water pipes) representing the 99 tribes that founded the great city of L'Aquila! Beautiful! It's also free.

The fountain is really interesting - in a peaceful setting near the wall around L'Aquila, it is like nothing I've seen before. All of the spouts were streaming clear, cool water and it was in great condition. That said, I would not recommend a visit...More

Every time I visit L'Aquila, a visit to the Fontana delle 99 Cannelle is always on the cards. I love the fact that it's still a mystery as to where the water comes from and that it managed to survive the earthquake. I also love...More

The fountain with its 99 spouts was a tribute to the 99 lords who helped to build L'Aquila in the middle of the 13th century by taking care of the construction of one church, one square and one fountain each. The water never stopped flowing,...More

This fountain commemorates the 99 founders of the city who joined forces in the middle of the 13th century to build L'Aquila each financing the construction of a church, a square and a fountain and all together the fountain with 99 spouts; the spring that...More
