This was an opportunity not to be missed for us, to walk along Antica Strada Valeriana. The track stretches on the Eastern side of Lake Iseo from Pilzone d'Iseo in the south to Pisogne in the north, the total length of the track is 24.3 kilometres and it is estimated to take roughly nine hours to complete, of course the path can be walked in sections. A good amount of my pre-holiday time was spent planning out our hike, discovering a detailed hiking map for the Antica Strada Valeriana online was a great breakthrough.
As we were staying in Sale-Marasino we picked up the track above the town and headed north to Pisogne. The track is a mixture of surfaces, sealed paths and roads but the track in predominately dirt and stones, there are many We set out early one morning before the sun hit the side of the mountains so that we kept ourselves cool for as long as possible. The days were hitting 34 Celsius while we were on the lake this May. We packed plenty of water and food for our estimated six hour day out, there are opportunities along the way to drink and top up flasks from water fountains in the villages. It is important to dress appropriately, wear suitable shoes, take supplies with you including sunscreen and a hat.
The hike is challenging, at times intense, quite steep requiring a good level of fitness and footwear. The surface of the path is constantly changing, mostly a rough path although there are sections of sealed paths and roads to walk. We encountered very few people along the path and saw only a few locals in the villages that we passed through. The highlights of the day were hiking in solitude, being surrounded by nature, stunning views of the lake, our morning break with the view of the Piramidi at Zone, passing by dinosaur footprints just before Passo Croce di Zone, a lunch break by the path leading to the steep and rocky climb down St.Bartolomeo to Pisogne.
The path is well signed and marked out, we looked out for the yellow and brown 'V' symbol on trees, rocks, walls all day long, at times it was a little difficult to see but we never lost our way and always felt safe.
It was with a welcome relief to finally arrive in Pisogne after six hours from leaving 'home', of that was roughly five hours of hiking and one hour of morning and lunch breaks. We were very lucky to have perfect weather, blue sky and sunshine, the path would be quite challenging in the rain. From Pisogne we caught the train back to Sale-Marasino (purchase train tickets at the cafe/bar next to the station).
Hopefully we will return to Lake Iseo in the future and walk the remaining section from Sale-Marasino to Pilzone d'Iseo.

We parked in Pilzone in the lot designated for trail users, and walked the first two segments of the trail, from Pilzone to Dosso.
The walk was lovely, with amazing views of the lake throughout. The villages and churches along the way were excellent as well. There is plenty of water along the trail.
As the far end, we descended to Sale Marisino for lunch by the lake and caught the train back to our car.
A couple of watch-outs: The trains only run about every two hours, so check schedules before you set out.
Also, there aren't really any restaurants or local bars along the route, so bring lunch and enjoy it along the trail.

This is my second time doing this walk; it's a must-see, must-do. The views are breathtaking and the only sounds you'll hear are the birds singing. I recommend that you do dress in layers and wear a reliable, comfortable pair of shoes. Don't forget your camera, a sketch book or a diary to journal the animals, the trees, and all the flowers you'll see.
I've made a few friends along the way (villagers who reside and work here). It's worth the time stopping to speak to them if they're not too busy. And don't forget to research this area for it's rich history.

You won't find many 5 stars/excellent reviews by me. It has to be exceptional. This walk is fabulous. You can do all or part. We has time for about a third be caused we paused so many times along the way and took our time. I would never had know about this if it had not been for other TA posters. Thank you. We asked at our hotel, we asked in several towns...no one....locals anyway, knew what it was

Walking this trail brings you back to Roman times when this was the only way along the Lake Iseo.
Beautiful views on the lake, shade and sunshine, the fragrances of dozens of herbs, the signalling of the birds....

We drove to Marone, parked (in a free zone) just above the train station. Then we walked in the direction of Vesto over the 'main road'. There we came across a sign towards the Antica Valeriana. It took us 2 hrs to walk to Tassano, the village at the end of our second leg. The day was slightly less warm than others and we would have liked to walk on to Pilzone for another hour. But... I had found a great looking restaurant in Sulzano. And there's nothing much in Pilzone. Looking at the train schedule, since we would have to take the train back to Marone, we decided to head down to our restaurant. The walk was beautiful! Up and down through the lovely old paths and olive trees with amazing views over the lake.
From Tassano we walked 20 minutes to the restaurant I had spotted: Trattoria Cacciatore. Yummy is an understatement. Local produce prepared with love, accompanied by delicious local wine and an amazing view over the lake. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

A restored former packhorse path. We walked various parts of it. Starts one station east of Iseo or catch the train further up the lake and venture out from there.

We walked only a stretch of the road, about 9 km. We left the car in a parking lot at Sale Marasino and we walked to Piramidi di Zone a charming landscape made by water erosion. On the way we walked amomg olive trees and we enjoyed wonderful wiews on Iseo lake. You need tracking shoes, above all on the last part of the walk.

This hike looks amazing. Can you tell me the level of difficulty? The altitude change? We are seniors in good shape, we walk/ hike 4 miles a day on a daily basis.
Written October 13, 2017
Yes the hike is fantastic, so rewarding. I suggest you check out the iseolake info website for this trail, it breaks up the trail in sections and gives details like level of difficulty, distance, time to hike and elevation.

Buongiorno a tutti, per arrivare a questo sentiero da dove si parte? Ci sono indicazioni? Lasciando l'auto a Iseo come si arriva in prossimità del sentiero? Fin dove arriva? Grazie mille a chiunque risponderà 😊
Written March 12, 2017
Buona passeggiata

The route starts in Pilzone near the train station and continues north for about 24 kilometers until Pisogne but you can cut short to any of the train stations along the way. There is a train station about every 2 hours of walking.
The trail on wikiloc but you can start and end at any point.
