About
Follonica's heart beats again at the MAGMA. Housed in the restored St Ferdinand Furnace, the city's most historic building, the museum is a treasure trove of wonder, where age-old walls stand side-by-side modern multimedia technology. A virtual journey of discovery across time and space, back to the cradle of the Italian iron industry, against an extraordinary backdrop of industrial archaeology.

This unique, new museum is based upon and housed in Follonica's center of wrought iron production, which had its high point in the 19th and early 20th centuries. But the roots of this industry goes back to Etruscan times, something which is well documented in the museum.

Firstly under 12's are free so it cost 4 of us just €10 entry. For that you might not expect too much but it is really very very good.

Don't be put off by the potentially very specific and dry subject matter, it's as much a museum about the formation of follonica and it's people as it is about the iron that was forged there.

To design a museum where many different age groups can learn in an enjoyable way is difficult but has been done very well here. The various multimedia displays held the attention of our 6 year old and our 50 year old alike ! It had a decent amount of interactivity which helps greatly with the children.

One thing to consider...if you are visiting the nearby church of St Leopold, the church itself becomes much more interesting if you have been to this museum first.

We spent a very enjoyable and educational couple of hours and would highly recommend it.

Many concerts, spectacles, events. A lot of modern art. It is also a very nice place for children. Close to MAGMA There is a public library with a special place for small children. I get there from the beach to stay in relax and silence.

Impressive: a multimedial and edgy set-up to tell the history of Follonica and its cast iron foundries through the eyes of the people who lived and worked here for the last two centuries and beyond. I was very moved, it was really like meeting all those people, or like going back to those times. Kids of all ages will love all the special light effects: for this reason, it is better to visit it after the sunset or on a clouded day.
