The Iron Gate is situated in the central part of Follonica and you will easily find it wakling from sea on Roma Street. The Iron Gate is the entrance to the open museum of industrial mechanisms and anchors from 60-s of the industrial union Ilva.

It's just a gate albeit a large interesting iron gate. However, go the Magma museum of iron (which is an excellent family friendly experience) in the park inside and it's history and importance in relation to follonica will be explained (along with many other things). Then go back out and it no longer looks like just a gate but an impressive and important piece of local history.

Important landmark of local history hidden in plain sight

I have stumbled on this gate by pure chance, missing a turn on my way to our host. It surprised me by its size and apparent lack of purpose: a huge, quite elaborate gate on a very anonymous street, with nothing special in the back. There is no sign to explain you what it is, only some boards written only in Italian about some very grim and unimpressive buildings in the area behind the gate. I almost forgot about it, until I have been asked by tripadvisor.com if I can review it. Only then I realized it was something of some importance and checked on internet. This is how I found about the history of Follonica and the significance of the gate. Too bad that the city of Follonica does not make this accessible at least for the people that, completely innocent, happen to see the gate by chance!

An attractive feature of the towns history, it leads to a nice park and the library and a new museum

It adds to the ambiance. Follonica's Older section has many examples of fine iron balconies, etc. the iron gate is just one of many. We especially liked the iron porch on the main church.
