Last week my husband and I had the most fabulous time with Laura Garani, our art and history guide extraordinaire. She met us in these five cities: Verona, Padua, Venice, Ferrara, and Ravenna. Laura is exceptionally knowledgeable about these cities since she lives in the area. She knows the long history and has stories to tell about every piazza and building. Our favourite saying of hers was “you have to look up” because she was constantly showing us things of incredible beauty and interest that we would’ve missed had she not pointed them out. Her knowledge of art was deep and wide, as well. I am especially interested in early renaissance art and Laura was a master at explaining frescoes and sculptures alike. She gave us lists of things to do on our own when we weren’t together and was also very helpful in guiding us to great restaurants. Laura is a gem! She also happens to be a lovely person with fun and entertaining stories of her amazing adventures. We can’t wait to return to Italy and spend more time with Laura in other cities.

I have been on several of Lucia’s virtual tours (some in English and some in Italian) over the past several months. Having never visited Ferrara, these were a chance for me to get a sense for the city and its art before hopefully visiting soon in person. I have to say that Lucia far exceeded those expectations. Her virtual tours are a feast - a banquet - for any art lover. They are true masterclasses presented through elegant storytelling. That’s why I keep going back and hope anyone reading this review will sign up for the next one. They are well worth your time.

We sought out expert guide Laura for a tour of Ferrara and then continued with Ravenna. In the former, we trusted her judgment about sites, choosing the palazzo frescoes over the more standard castle for instance. The frescoes were a standout, and we were still marveling at the history they told much later. It was the same in Ravenna, city of amazing fifth century mosaics. She gave us insight into their history but also the narratives behind them. We did three of five ticketed museums with her and then the remaining two easily on our own after lunch. Laura is not only expert but a charming and pleasant personality. We could not have been more pleased.

When friends and I decided to hire a guide in Ferrara, we were fortunate to connect with Laura Garani. Laura met us at our hotel and we wanderied around the medieval streets of the city visiting historic neighborhoods and significant buildings that housed works of art, including frescos and sculptures . Laura is fun, friendly, and professional. She has an amazing wealth of information about the art and history to the city. After the tour she joined for lunch and directed us to a local bistro and made other suggestions of things to see. After Ferrara my husband and i visited Venice for several days. We asked Laura to meet us there for a morning tour that would be off the beaten tourist path. We started with an espresso at a local cafe. Once again we had a fabulous and interesting tour of neighborhoods, churches and art, but we visited quieter neighborhoods and avoided the crowds. After the tour Laura suggested we have lunch at a local Osteria where we sampled typical foods of Venice. We invited her to join us. I had my first spritz, Aperol, Sparkling wine and water; a delicious Venetian cocktail. Deciding what to see in these cities and where to go can be daunting. A great way to become oriented is with a guided tour. if you are visiting Venice, Ravenna, Bologna, Modena, Mantua, Padua, or Urbino, I strongly urge you to hire Laura Garani to give you a tour. She makes the history alive and interesting with her knowledge and her stories.
