On October 13, 2024 F.A.I. day I had the great pleasure of participating in the guided tour in the church of San Paolo which was once the parish of the Casa d'Este. Of ancient origins, as evidenced by the traces of fifteenth-century frescoes found and the boundary wall between the first cloister and the church. It was rebuilt by the architect Alberto Schiatti (who named the square in which it stands) because it was damaged by the earthquake of 1570. Latin cross plant with three naves, externally it is terracotta with white marble ornaments. The interior has three naves and five semi-circular side chapels on each side, the naves are marked by arches resting on pillars, the altarpieces of the rich marble altars that are under restoration are not visible to this day. It has been pointed out that the left aisle is wider than the right because in the 60s of the 17th century the chapel of Carmine was built, decorated with a fresco by Parolini of 1705 depicting the Glory of the Virgin. Very beautiful fresco of Elijah kidnapped to the sky, in the apse basin, which is due to Scarsella, while the busts of the saints are attributed to Carlo Bononi. In the pavement there are the tombs (non-identifying, containing the bone remains of illustrious characters transferred from the cemetery) so much so that it is called "the pantheon" of the city for the burials of the poet Guarino Veronese, the composer Luzzasco Luzzaschi, Alberto Lollio and Giovan Francesco de Grossi, known as Siface. After the visit of the church we passed to the Cloister, dwelling on the history of the fragments found. I hope to return in the future to admire the restored canvases.

A church that can be visited during events such as FAI days or Open Monuments. Just finished restoration after the earthquake of 2012. Spectacular, with very peculiar frescoes. In particular Elijah kidnapped to Heaven, and the conversion and beheading of St. Paul, which have almost pagan tones and more suited to the noble residence than to a church. If you have a chance don't forget to go.
