The ancient walls of Ferrara are almost intact. The tree-lined path on top of them is a favourite place for joggers, dog-walkers and cyclists - and also for tourists wanting to stroll in the shade and get a different view of the city's rooftops

We borrowed two bikes from where we were staying and rode around the outside of the walls and into one of the parks. Interesting without being spectacular. Fun thing to do but not exceptional.

We walked round most of the walls missing about one fifth of the possible distance. While we really enjoyed the walk and the exercise , the views were a bit disappointing and uninteresting. The different types of trees were interesting, however we did not need shade on an unseasonably cold mid October day with a cold wind blowing.

A retreat to a beautiful park can be a refreshing change from treading the cobblestones and eyeballing the frescoes. My husband and I took advantage of the free bikes available from our B&B but if loaners aren't available, I'd say the experience is well worth seeking out rentals. Mind you, we are not athletes and it's been quite some time... More

For people in ferrara this is just the best place to have a run. During the summer is the best way to have a walk outdoor but stay in the shade from the hot sun. If you can get there by bike it's even better, so that you can see the most of it. It's all around the city. during... More

I hired a bicycle and spent some time writing along the walls. It's just one of those things you have to do when you're in Ferrara.

Ferrara town walls are unique and they definitely deserve a visit. This is a nice town and we enjoyed a day-stop on the way to Castiglione della Pescaia.

Medieval wall surrounding the city Centre. You have trees along on both sides that provide a wonderful shade in summer. That is probably the only option to walk / run in summer in Ferrara. The landscape is wonderful at both sunrise and down with a beautiful and colorful view. If it is too dark the people sat in the benches... More

Considering the other stuff to see in Ferrara I wouldn't make seeing the walls a priority. It's not like the city walls of Avila, Spain or anything. It is more like a low brick wall mostly circling the city. If you have time, it is mostly tree lined so it would make for a great walk.
