Ferrara town walls are unique!

Ferrara town walls are unique and they definitely deserve a visit. This is a nice town and we enjoyed a day-stop on the way to Castiglione della Pescaia.

I really do not want to keep writing all the details over and over. It is well worth a visit as are all the other historical, ecclesiastical and cultural buildings. I do not go to restaurants for food, there are many in the area but I normally have a spritz and nibbles. i encourage everyone to see all they can.

Medieval wall surrounding the city Centre. You have trees along on both sides that provide a wonderful shade in summer. That is probably the only option to walk / run in summer in Ferrara. The landscape is wonderful at both sunrise and down with a beautiful and colorful view. If it is too dark the people sat in the benches... More

Considering the other stuff to see in Ferrara I wouldn't make seeing the walls a priority. It's not like the city walls of Avila, Spain or anything. It is more like a low brick wall mostly circling the city. If you have time, it is mostly tree lined so it would make for a great walk.

After spending two days exploring the historical, medieval centre of Ferrara - we decided to take advantage of the bikes available for rent at our hotel (Hotel Carlton). So glad we did - this was a highlight of our time in Ferrara! A great way to see the city - and on a warm day - the breeze from cycling... More

One of the most lovely things about Ferrara is its wide, intact medieval walls. They are perfect for bicycling along. Many people ride bikes, run, or walk their dogs up along the wall, but its wide enough for everyone. There were many benches along the way to pause and look out or into the city. We didn't go all the... More

Second review. I was visiting Ferrara yet again, where I have friends, and had a lovely stroll along the walls. The news in town is that they have a flock of sheep slowly circling the walls to keep the vegetation under control in a natural process, which is an attraction for young children. There seem to be always two paths... More

We cycled on top of the wall again and again during our day in the town. Don't expect a "Great Wall"-like thing. It is more like a wide bank with sometimes grassy patches and on other places is purely bricks. A very enjoyable thing to do when in Ferrara.

Whether walking or cycling, this is a marvellous place to visit. The City walls are skirted by open parkland which provides a great contrast to the townscape. Take time to sit and enjoy the wildlife - the doves nesting in the walls and the lizards that scurry to and fro.....A peaceful place full of atmosphere.
