I’m just glad that we decided to drive up to this beautiful place. The road to reach Erice is up the mountain and we even encountered fog on the way, but when you reach the top the sun is there waiting for you in this magical place.
There are lots of restaurants and shops where you can buy local souvenirs which seem authentic. It is nice just to wander around the cobblestone streets, randomly. Do not wear heels or leather sole shoes, the stones are so smooth that it’s easy to slip.
Erice is also connected to Trapani via cableways but we didn’t try it.

The town was misty and a tad fresh when we arrived. It reminded me of quite a few places we have visited in the past with the Norman layout. The town is full of windy narrow streets selling the usual tourist trappings. The view which we missed due to the weather would of been magnificent.

Medieval Erice is located on top of Mount Erice, at around 750 metres above sea level and you can have the most beautiful view in Sicily. The panorama is simply breathtaking. You can find there three city gates and walls around the city probably made by Elimi. After the passing of the gate you reach the medieval streets with the churches, shops, restaranuts, old castel. The concept of the city as a museum. The most interesting building is cathedral with genial marble work of Giuliano Mancino in the main altar made in 1513 and decorated vaulted ceiling from the 19th century. Must visit when you are in the western part of Sicily.

It's always a pleasure to walk in the romantic center of Erice, often wrapped in a cloud, even during summer. There are many little shop and restaurants and ancient monuments in a magic and welcoming atmosphere.

A fascinating medieval village - certainly NOT a town or city. It is perched some 750 metres above Trapani and can be reached by car - up a steep & winding road - or by the efficient and cheap funierice cable car that holds around 8 people per car and costs only a few euros for the return 8 minute trip.
The village consists mostly of mellow creamy stone buildings that include a lovely church and cathedral, many eateries and a sprinkling of tourist shops. The streets are narrow, cobbled and sometimes steep: many are pedestrianized and it's quite difficult to find your way around...especially when low clouds smother the village - reducing visibility and temperatures. Apparently this happens a good deal and it certainly prevented us from any great views of the countryside & coast below!
We walked from the port into Trapani and then caught an ATM bus to the cable car. We enjoyed our morning but cut the tour because of the cold and lack of visibility at the top of Erice...don't say you haven't been warned.

Beautiful village to wander around. Little alleyways some of which not suitable for the generously sized. Lots of restaurants and shops to browse. I re moment buying the multiple entry pass to visit the churches, etc.

Once you go in, you do not know where the streets will take you, but it will be fantastic. Stairwells, tight corners, tight streets, views if the sea..

This area is great for walking. It’s a little uphill but it’s like going back centuries in time. It hasn’t added all the tourist places yet and looks so cool.

Interesting old town with lots of character. More of a tourist town these days and a few locals that might summer up here, but tourists for the most part.
